’28 definitive player poised for ‘Bigger Things’

There aren’t too many sophomores who are two-year starters around the KHSAA. If you count “two-year guys” at prestigious private schools with deeply talented rosters on teams routinely and annually competing for championships coming off a title season, the number is even less. Matthew Montgomery is such a ’28 prospect. Still, there is a difference in the football world from being the hunted as opposed to the hunter. LCA finds itself in such a position; so does Matthew Montgomery. Simply put, Montgomery enters his junior season the definitive player at his position across the commonwealth.

eCampus.com was built on a simple idea: make textbooks affordable, convenient, and accessible for every student. Founded in 1999 in Lexington, KY and backed by visionary investors like Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas, the company has grown into a premier online textbook retailer for high school and college students nationwide.

Their mission has always been supporting student success both on and off the field through affordable access to the course materials they need. eCampus.com is excited to invest in our student-athletes through Kentucky Prep Gridiron (KPGFootball) which was founded to promote and assist young high school football players get promoted to “next level,” college football opportunities.

That is why eCampus.com sponsors the KPGFootball, Big Man on the eCampus series. This week’s Big Man on the eCampus is Matthew Montgomery. One reason we are featuring him here is Montgomery is among the very best ’28s on the roster and almost sure to be a big star for the Eagles going forward.

Montgomery made our small school all-state team. Montgomery will almost assuredly challenge to make future teams provided he continues to work, improve, and develop along his same arc or continuum.

We have no doubt there are Eagles we missed on our all-state team last year, other LCA players who should have made our all-state roster. No all-state team is flawless. This is one, however, we nailed.

Lexington Christian Academy (LCA) perennially competes for KHSAA championships at its level of play. Players developing into stars, like Montgomery, have a ton to do with the program’s progression.

Small School All-State Reveal Show

Lexington, KY: Who would have thought the Eagles performance up front would get better in ’25 than it was in ’24 with five D-1 guys cross the graduation stage last spring? Who would have thought the Eagles would graduate an entire starting front and change coaches and win its second title ever?

Guys like Matthew Montgomery upfront will do that for a program. If football hasn’t taught me anything, it has taught me that.

With Montgomery leading the way, the Eagles passed for 2,299-yards, completing 156 of 239-passing attempts (66% completion rate approximately), and 26-TDs against only 6-picks. The Eagles also rushed for 2,254-yards, on 350-carries (6.44-yards per), with 39-TDs by land.

When you play who the Eagles play, those numbers are unbelievable. Fending off the opponent’s pass rush leads to such offensive efficiency.

Now Montgomery has been, thus far in his football career, the young, over achieving, upstart. Montgomery will be a junior in ’26.

From this point forward, Montgomery is the upperclassman. Montgomery is the college prospect. Montgomery is the returning all-stater. Montgomery is the hunted not the hunter. There is a difference.

Montgomery will face something foreign to him thus far, he’s now the big cheese, he’s now the hunted

Friday Night Fletch

Montgomery measures 6’1,” 240-pounds and has grown some with more growth bound to occur. Montgomery is smack dab in the middle of the offseason between his sophomore and junior seasons. This is the offseason where some of the more drastic anatomical changes and development occurs.

Montgomery has a strong academic standing. Athletically, Montgomery has demonstrated the versatility to play DT in addition to his responsibilities at OG.

We see this kid, next level, at either offensive center or defensive tackle. We aren’t sure which as it depends largely on how Montgomery’s frame finishes.

Montgomery has the intelligence (3.7 GPA), burst, and twitch to play upfront in college on either side of the line right now. Montgomery will add additional power, strength, and size.

For now, Montgomery is one other thing in addition to all the other skills and assets we have highlighted. Montgomery may the KHSAA’s definitive player along LCA’s interior offensive line. Montgomery is also our eCampus.com Big Man on the eCampus this week!
