’27 QB/FS could be ‘next level’ at either position

The Lakers from Calloway County had a tremendous season last year. They won six games and had some next level development on its play roster. Coby Lewis is getting it done at Calloway and has everyone within the program asking the same question: Why Not Us? Matthew Briedwell was particularly prodigious and efficient running the offense with nearly 2,000-yards passing and a nearly 2:1 TD to INT ration. Briedwell also completed close to 58% of his passing attempts. The 6’3,” 190-pounder, deployed intermittently at FS in and amongst his QB’ing duties, completed 137 of his 237 passing attempts for 1,857-yards and 21-TDs against 11-picks. Briedwell gained 88-yards rushing and scored three (3) TDs by land. On top of all of that, Briedwell carried a 4.0-GPA. We love versatility at “KPGFootball” and the Bank of Cadiz. We love multi-phase utility. Basically, we love getting our money’s worth and so do you; that is why you do business with us. Well, that is the reason Briedwell is our featured player of the week. If history should repeat itself, whatever it turns out to be will be special.

Murray, KY: Coby Lewis continues to do a fine job at the helm of the Calloway County Lakers. His men are getting it done in the weight room this offseason and coming off a fine year (six-wins)with the type talent on the roster to make the faithful wonder just how far Lewis can take this crowd.

Lewis has these fans asking an all-important question. Why not us?

Matthew Briedwell embodies the infusion of talent the roster has seen developed under Lewis’s watchful eye and persistent efforts. Briedwell is a 6’3,” 190-pounder who can play free safety in addition to what he brings to the table at QB.

Briedwell brought plenty to the table at QB in 2025. Briedwell completed 58% of his passing attempts (137/237) for 1,857-yards and 21- thrown TDs. Briedwell tossed 11-INTs, which is higher than what would be preferred but several of them were not really attributable to him.

Briedwell isn’t really a dual-threat guy. Breidwell can “move around” and avoid pressure but his run-game is far from lethal. It is effective, as the rising senior carried the ball 36-times in 2025, for 88-yards, and three (3) TDs.

The most important statistic for any QB is wins-losses. This QB led his team to a six-win finish in 2025 that was pretty close to district contention in 4A’s first district for much of the year. That is easier said than done when you share a district with Paducah Tilghman’s Blue Tornado.

Matthew Briedwell carries a 4.0-GPA. That is a quintessential characteristic for a QB of whom we expect sound play-calling, front identification replete with protection calls for blitzes, stunts, and twists, and of whom we will expect appropriate and intelligent decisions.

Briedwell has a high IQ. Football, classroom, or otherwise…

The Lakers have a big season upcoming in 2026. They would like to improve on ’25’s six wins. They will have to do it post the graduation of at least one all-timer in Logan Smith.

While Smith has graduated, the remainder of the crew will have to carry on in his absence and are working hard to do just that. There is still plenty of talent around Murray, KY to make the Lakers quite formidable in ’26 and Briedwell would number among them.

We believe Briedwell has a future as a two-way, multi-phase performer. With his frame and athleticism, his playing FS in college is far from out of the question. Matter of fact, if it were we, we would be tempted to play him at some FS this coming Fall.

Briedwell has plenty of explosion and power, and has good speed and quicks. Briedwell has put in the offseason work and effort to hone his craft.

The Lakers have served notice in ’25 that it was a 4A, first district program with which to reckon. Calloway will have a target on its back going forward.

There is a big difference in being the hunted as opposed to being the hunter. Calloway may not quite be the hunter yet; but, they are far from easy prey, far from being overlooked on anyone’s schedule.

Can Coach Lewis continue the development and run of success his Lakers and he have enjoyed? If it is to do that, it will require sustained brilliant flashes similar to what we saw a season ago from Matthew Briedwell.

We know this, the Lakers will be excellently coached and excellently prepared. We like this program’s track record. We love this program’s trajectory.

This offseason will go along way in answering questions. Regardless, seeing the answers revealed should prove entirely interesting. 

Let’s just hope Matthew Briedwell continues to demonstrate the marked improvement he has shown thus far. That would really get this program off on the right foot in 2026!
