’27 ATH, two-way player, has been a bright spot in a difficult final season
If the surname “Abren” sounds familiar, it should. There have been a long, distinguished line of Abrens who have been stars on the athletic fields of Hopkinsville, Kentucky for generations. You find that in small towns like Hopkinsville; year after year, decade after decade, kids with similar pedigrees and surnames re-surface, time and again, to lead area sports teams. Paul Abren is no different. Abren, accomplished in a variety of sports from wrestling, to powerlifting, to football, and who couldn’t be a finer young man and a credit to Abrens the community over, is our “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee & Tea” player of the week. He has been selected both for his outstanding play and his just being an outstanding person.

Hopkinsville (Christian County), KY: We would be the first to acknowledge the last season ever, for the Christian County Colonel High School football program, hasn’t gone according to plan. The Colonels are 1-6, have games against McCracken County, cross-town Hoptown (with whom the school will be merging for next year), and Tilghman High (Paducah) at Mac Wright Stadium.
This may get worse before it gets any better. That shouldn’t be taken to mean Christian County’s roster is devoid of football players with ability. Nothing could be further from the truth.
We have before written about some of the very fine, young, freshman talent the Colonels boast; players like Bryson “Cowboy” Ford (’29)and Kam Wells (’29), a pair who have played much better than their tender years would indicate them capable. We have written about the fine job, first year starter at QB, Tom Johnson (’26), has done or his counterparts in the offensive backfield, the ’27 RBs, Deasian Harris (’27) and Tristin Dillard (’27).
Today we wish to write about ’27 prospect, Paul Abren. Abren’s play this year, and in multiple phases of the Colonel attack, has been a bright spot in an otherwise dismal season.
Now, Abren is 5’10,” with inordinately long arms (Abren family trait it would appear), who weighs 160-pounds and plays in all three phases of the game. Abren has been a leader in all the significant defensive statistics like tackles, TFLs, sacks, FFs, FRs, and PBUs (passes broken up).
Abren plays on the coverage units. Abren plays on the return units. Abren rarely, if ever, leaves the field.
Christian County has struggled…but has played better under Kelly Myers than previously

If you look at Abren’s “tale of the tape” you will readily see from where his prowess springs. For starters, Abren competes in track & field as a sprinter and has been an able mainstay on the wrestling mat as a grappler. Abren is also part of the powerlifting program.
Both wrestling (winter sport) and track & field (spring sport) have long histories as beneficial, offseason endeavors for football players looking to gain competitive advantages on the gridiron. We cover both sports offseason as part of our year round football coverage.

Abren, like the Abrens who came along before him, is a war horse in the weight room. Abren bench presses 245-pounds, can rep the high school rep weight (185) on the bench 10-times, and squats 455-pounds. We did mention he weighs 160-pounds, right?
Abren has wrestled at the 138-pound division, so his lifting numbers coming while wrestling, makes his numbers even more impressive. Abren is a better young man, off the field, than the player he is when on it.
One reason we nominated him for this award is we just wanted the opportunity to have breakfast with him. He’s just a great kid and a fun hang.
Identifying a potential weapon like Paul Abren, may give the Colonels an advantage over the closing stretch run and give them an edge over cross-town rival, Hopkinsville High.n That is why Paul Abren from Christian County High, is this week’s Lasaters Coffee & Tea, Wake Up and Smell the Coffee Player of the Week.

We feel it is high time for people around Christian County, KY to take notice of this outstanding young Colonel, Paul Abren, and some of the Colonel’s other outstanding performers. Hey Christian County Colonels, as far as Paul Abren is concerned; it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee!
In an effort to help this prospect’s continued development, Paul Abren may go, this Friday (October 17, 2025), to any of our area locations and be served a free drink of his choice and free breakfast or other sandwich/food item, completely free of charge!
