’25 ATH maybe the most dangerous dual-threat on the western end of Kentucky
Jarren Johnson had an incredible game against a Hancock County team which rolled into Morganfield, Kentucky undefeated. Johnson threw one pass, but it was a TD, and he ran it 10-times, four times over the goal line. He gained 228-yards on the ground and the Braves took an eye-popping 49-7 vanquishment into the final dressing room. The Braves, who we picked to challenge for the 3A crown are rounding into the contenders we believed they would be. With a trip to Webster County and a home date with 5A, Greenwood, remaining it is looking quite probably Derek Johns’ team may enter the playoffs riding an 8-2 mark with the district’s top seed.

Morganfield, KY: Anyone who has ever grown up on the “tough side” of town knows full well threatening the block bully versus actually whipping the block bully are entirely different propositions. Don’t get it twisted, the Union County Braves are the bully on the 3A, first-district block regardless of what Hancock or McLean’s records may be.
Hancock was feeling good about itself rolling into last weekend. The Hornets were 7-0. The Hornets owned wins over John Hardin and McLean while putting 64-points on Trigg and 59-points on Webster. It was supposed to be a first-district, Hornet coronation.
Union County, and Coach Derek Johns, didn’t get the memo. Riding 357-rushing yards, and 6-rushing TDs, the Braves threw gasoline all over the Hornets’ nest in a 49-7, eye-popping rout.
Johnson was scintillating. What did you expect to see?
Johnson has done it his entire career. He did it again this past weekend, leaving fans and critics alike to exclaim, “Wow!”
The 5’8,” 185-pound senior completed his only pass, a 23-yard TD strike, and contributed 228-yards and four (4) of the team’s six (6) ground scores while averaging 22.8-yards per rushing attempt. For the season, Johnson has gained 1,316-yards, scoring 25-TDs, in only 124-carries. This QB may well be the best RB in the KHSAA.
The Braves have two remaining games before sliding into the playoffs. The Braves travel to Webster, where they enjoy a 99% chance of winning and figure to win by a margin of 55-points, then the Braves are home for 5A, Greenwood, out of Bowling Green.
The “Gators” are presently 5-3, play Bowling Green this weekend (which means the Gators are probably coming to Morganfield, 5-4) and have a 27% chance of beating the Braves on November 1. That 5A game, should the Braves win (favored by nine-points), will be a nice RPI boost heading into the playoffs.
With Union ranked fifth (5th), right now, in the RPI; the Greenwood game should undo any harm playing Webster does to the Braves RPI as the playoffs quickly approach.
Union is likely to be home a while, folks. Look for Union to make a run. I wouldn’t bet against it.
Then again, what do I know?
