It is that time of year. It is time to start figuring which teams, entering the ’25 season, figure to factor in the title chase. We have detailed what we think here and it is based on our study of the incoming, ’25 rosters, what players return, what players graduated, and other various factors we have perfected through the years to render such predictions. We plan to do this for all of Kentucky’s six (6) classifications and there is no guarantee we will go in order from the top down, or the bottom to the top. There are good football teams in the KHSAA and there are bad ones and those teams span all of the six classes. Enjoy today’s look at 5A. Keep checking back as we may drop another class any time we feel like it.

There are tons of players of whom you know absolutely nothing who will hit the field this fall and bedazzle you with their brilliance. We see it season after season. However, at KPGFootball we feel the term “expertise” requires something of us. We like to get out and look at the up and coming kids and predict which of these kids will be future stars before anyone else. We believe Gary Daugherty, Jr. from Central High has the frame and the brains to emerge from the summer camp/combine circuit with an opportunity to show everyone what he can really do. We think the show may prove breathtaking. Enjoy this feature and let’s sit on this a second and see if we don’t prove ourselves correct, yet another time!

Hence is a guy who is hard to pigeon-hole. Yes, he can play some QB. Yes, he can play WR. Yes, he can play DB. Where should he play? I don’t know, where do you need him? This guy is what all high school rosters would love to have. Hence is a 6’2,” 180-pounder who can be plugged in anywhere. He was called upon to throw a few passes in ’24 and he completed 90% of his passing attempts (9/10). He caught 38-passes for nearly 500-yards and six (6) scores and was third on the team in scoring. We hear he is a “lock-down,” backend defender too. Enjoy this feature and let’s keep it comfortable out there, Kentucky!

Nash Bird is a “Dude.” This guy had a really fruitful day at the KWC Junior Combine and left Owensboro on quite a few “recruiting boards.” This guy will field some offers this summer. If he has the kind of season in ’25 he had in ’24, look out 5A, District 7, because the Colts will be looking to improve drastically over the 3-8 Scott Marsh’s Colts posted a year ago. This is a kid with good length (76-inch wingspan), decent strength (225-pound bench press), an upper level speed for a kid in the spring of his sophomore year (4.69-second 40; 4.44 second short shuttle). Henderson County has a long storied football tradition. We all remember a time Coach Randy Reese had the Colonels ranked at the top of Kentucky in both 1987 and 1988. We all remember his winning five (5) consecutive districts before bolting for Warren East. Coach Boston had a few good years before stepping down at the end of the 2024 season. Coach John Elliott take the reins and this isn’t his first Henderson, Kentucky rodeo having twice been on the staff at the school prior to his being named the head coach. Elliott is an inductee into the Indiana High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame so no one will be taking it easy on any John Elliott coach time, if you catch my drift. Elliott will not find the cupboard barren, as he returns last year’s “Sack Master,” Jericho Butler. Enjoy the feature.

Brody Calhoun is an example of a star HS player who is very likely to play in college but at what competitive level we aren’t in a position to accurately forecast. You see, there is a possibility Calhoun isn’t done growing so to know at what college level he may play we would have to speculate how his frame finishes. We just aren’t in a position to know. Calhoun’s on field production is “off the charts” as the rising junior has made close to 160-career tackles and hasn’t taken his first 11th-grade class yet. We are approaching “Dead Period” so get ready. Not much lies on the other side of “Dead Period” apart from two preseason scrimmages and opening night. We’re ready. We hope you are. We love versatility and athleticism at KPGFootball. Matter of fact, we have been featuring kids in the high school game who thrive in multiple phases of football for well over a year. We thing a “Mr. Football” candidate should be good at, well,…Football! Fancy that! Well, if you are looking for a dark horse candidate for “Mr. Football” in ’25 may we suggest you check out North Oldham’s Lucas Thompkins. Thompkins is a 6’1,” 185-pound DB/WR who killed it on both sides of the football his junior year. Enjoy this feature and remember where you first heard this.

Lucas Flint may be the strongest rising sophomore in KHSAA history. Fling it 6’1,” and weighs 285-pounds. He has bench pressed 405, squatted 555, power cleaned 275, and runs the 40-yard dash in a cool 4.9-seconds. He’s 15-freaking-years-old. This cat had 29-tackles playing 5A football in the commonwealth of Kentucky a year ago for a team routinely in the hunt for the 5A title. He plays for one of the best coaches to have ever walked a sideline and he is perfectly positioned to turn into a very highly recruited prospect. We love his frame, right now, for where he is projected to play next level, which is nose. He could turn around and make a “Drake Jackson-type” center on the offensive side, next level too. Lucas Franklin Flint, better learn the name now because everyone will want to know it in just a couple short years. Let’s keep it comfortable out there, Kentucky, and allow us to help you out in that regard.

Blaze Whitaker is an accomplished soccer player. He has made All-State teams and All-Region teams in that sport where he stars on the varsity team as an “Attacking Midfielder.” I would say if there is a soccer player in the world who could transition to American Football, it would be the “Attacking Midfielder.” When in doubt, attack! Whitaker got seven games of run in ’24 as a sophomore and converted 12 of his 23 PAT attempts. We would like to see that conversion rate increase significantly as would the Storm coaching staff. That said, there is no reason to not expect significant improvement with more practice and more experience coupled with anatomical development. Enjoy this feature about a kid who plays an important phase of football often overlooked.
