’25 QB may be the most efficient player at his position in KHSAA history
In 2023, Luke Pennington, from Sayre High in Lexington, threw for over 2,500-yards and 50-TDs without a single interception. How is that even possible. So far this year, Pennington has already thrown for 1,630-yards and 32-TDs. Guess how many picks he has thrown this year? You guessed it; none. He is completing around 79% of his passes this year, completed 68% a year ago, and has led his ball club to a 20-wins in its past 21-ball games. One doesn’t get any more efficient than that.

Lexington, KY: Luke Pennington may be the most efficient quarterbacks to ever align under center in the high school game across the Bluegrass. That is a tremendous “mouthful;” but, allow us to make our case for that very proposition.
Last year, as a junior, Pennington threw for over 2,500-yards, completed over 68% of his passing attempts, and threw for 50-TDs. He rushed for a TD too, not that it matters. The most amazing of his stats is he didn’t throw a single INT.
Luke Pennington
How is that even possible? He threw over 250 passing attempts. One would thinks a defender might tip one up in the air, or something.
This season, so far, Pennington has thrown the football 140-times, completing 110. That is a completion rate of right at 79%, quite an improvement over last season. Pennington has thrown for 1,630-yards in the first eight games, on pace to eclipse last year’s numbers should they play as many games (13), has thrown 32-TDs and still hasn’t thrown a pick.
Pennington has upped his rushing TDs from last season from one to three. Quite an increase, nothing at which to sneeze.
Over the course of this demonstration of pin-point accuracy and precision, the Spartans have been equally efficient. Sayre has won 20 of its previous 21-football games, is coming off a 12-1 effort, and is 8-0 so far this year.
Sayre has NOT been playing a ton of Palookas either. The Spartans have beaten a 7-1, 2A team in Bracken County. The Spartans have beaten the stuffin’ out of 3A, Bourbon County.
There appears to be a little work left to do. Provided these Spartans hope to go as far or even farther than their ’23 counterparts.
Against Frankfort, Pennington completed all 20 of his passing attempts for 281-yards and five (5) TDs

Sayre will go out on the road to finish the season at Eminence and at Bethlehem. Both Eminence and Bethlehem have identical 5-3 marks but not all records are equally comprised as we have before discussed.
The Durden Ratings Index (DRI) has assigned a score of 75.8333333 to Sayre while Eminence posted a 42.1. That would suggest Sayre would be favored to win by 30-plus, even on the road.
The Durden Ratings Index (DRI) has the game with Bethlehem a much tighter contest to end the regular season. Plus, the game being in Bardstown, most people “in the know” would tell you Bardstown isn’t an easy place to play.
Bethlehem has a DRI score of 68.16666667. That would make Sayre a touchdown favorite in that season ender.
Should Sayre get to the playoffs 10-0, and depending on how some of the other 1As finish, Sayre could be home a few rounds in the coming playoffs. Sayre is second in the current 1A RPI behind only Campbellsville.
Sayre will take a “hit” for playing Eminence as they are well down the RPI list. However, Bethlehem is 3rd in the present RPI, for the 1A classification, so playing them before a playoff run should be helpful.
Join us next Friday when we feature another worthy KHSAA football player. Until then, let’s keep it comfortable out there Kentucky; and should you need any help with that; contact our friends at Big Ass Fans!
