The Aces return many valuable pieces and even added a few via transfer…
Owensboro Catholic is always (seemingly) beating programs it shouldn’t with talent which wouldn’t be on the field a lot of other places. That isn’t so true anymore as the Aces have playing and roster talent which would see PT anywhere in the commonwealth regardless of classification these days. We like the Aces to take the 2A title in the upcoming season and for the following reasons…
HB Lyon, Scouting Director, KPGFootball
Owensboro, KY: We like to refer to them as the “little team which could.” We do this because we have seen them start offensive linemen with “cankels.” We have seen them start guards who should be juggling bottles in a circus. We have seen them start defenders who look five inches short and 2-seconds slow and still beat some of Kentucky’s finest teams in the KHSAA.
There has to be some outstanding coaching occurring in Owensboro, Kentucky among the staff both headed and assembled by Jason Morris. They are representing the Church mighty well!
Jason Morris and staff have done a tremendous job, year in and out, beating teams from much larger classifications. The staff yearly positions their team to get to play many rounds within the friendly confines of Steele Stadium.
This coming season, the “Aces” will play 5A Apollo, Owensboro Senior, and Greenwood, and 6A Henderson, Daviess County, and North Hardin. That is a ton of multipliers.
Last season, the Aces, on its way to the highest RPI in the commonwealth, beat 5A Apollo, Greenwood, and Senior High (Owensboro High) and 6A, Daviess County, Henderson County (by 20) and North Hardin (on the road by 23). Three wins against 5A competition and three wins against 6A competition makes for a robust RPI score for a 2A team.
By the time the Aces actually get to play, in-district, they are primed, ready to thrive, and down-right scary. Ask their district foes, they will tell you.
Now, the Aces return some talent to the roster this year starting with its QB and “Mr. Football” candidate, Brady Atwell. Atwell, a relative of a previous “Mr. Football” winner, had an unbelievable season of production in ’23 even by Atwell-family standards.
Atwell competed 301 of his 434-passing attempts (nearly 70%) for 4,743-yards and 68-TDs against only six (6) picks. Atwell led the team in rushing with 695-yards and 17-TD on 69 rushing attempts. If those aren’t player of the year type numbers would someone direct me to what would be?
William Carrico has graduated but brother Vince returns. Vince Carrico, in ’23, tallied 197-tackles, 13.5-TFLs, 4-sacks, 1-INT, 2-FFs and a FR a year ago from his LB post.
Dereon Crowe has transferred over to 2A Catholic from 5A Owensboro (Sr.) High. Crowe, who had been ruled immediately “eligible,” is already drawing D-1 recruiting offers.
Last year, at Senior High, Crowe had 64-tackles, nine (9)-TFLs, three (3)-sacks, and a FR. Those numbers should increase significantly playing in 2A as opposed to 5A, though Catholic has shown a willingness to play any and all comers regardless of enrollment.
We featured Crowe earlier in the summer. We reiterate what we wrote about him at that time.
Dereon Crowe is a 6’2,” 200-pound specimen of a linebacker Catholic is not accustomed to aligning in its defensive 2nd level every day. Crowe runs a 4.65-second, 40-yard dash, and carries a 3.7 GPA.
This should be a case of an already rich and contending program at its classification finding a way to get a little bit richer. This would account for the incredible success the program is experiencing under the Morris regime.
So what, exactly, are we saying in this article? We are simply saying the following: Expect this Catholic squad to contend, again, for the 2A title. Expect this Catholic squad to return to Lexington, KY in early December.
Pick these guys to win on your weekly scorecard. We really don’t care who they end up playing. You shouldn’t either.
