We broke down 1A yesterday and promised to dissect 2A today. As promised, this is how we see it. This is the one classification where the team listed as No. 5 on our list could still win it all. What a job Chase Flaherty did filling in at RB for the newly crowned 2A Kentucky Champions, Beechwood, after it lost its “Mr. Football” candidate Mitchell Berger. Almost makes you think the Tigers are elite across the offensive front, which is the case by the way. Still, the championship game came down to Mayfield’s extra-point attempt sailing wide of a college goal post which would have been good had the kicker been kicking toward a high school goal post. The Tigers chances of repeating as Champions seemed to take a hit when Mitchell Berger went down with season ending surgery. Programs like Beechwood reload, not rebuild. So the Tigers loaded a couple of sophomores in the backfield behind maybe the commonwealth’s elite offensive line and they are right back in the Semis challenging for the program’s third straight 2A title. We aren’t going to lie to you. We prefer not to give this award to QBs all the time and we are really hesitant to award it to “past winners.” We strive to spread it around as there are so many weekly worthy players. However, sometimes a former winner, and even a QB, render a performance impossible to ignore. This week, Cameron Hergott, who has put up ridiculous numbers all season, had another performance we just couldn’t ignore. So, the EKU commit wins it again. At the end of this year the Mr. Football award is very likely to follow our lead. Enjoy the article. HB.
Is this team or that the best ever in Kentucky in its classification is heady and speculative talk. That aside, after the first four or so weeks of the season we have to wonder if LCA may not be the best 2A football team in Kentucky history? We believe the question is legitimate and fair. Here is our argumentative proof. HB.
Xavier Campbell is a guy who has played mighty well already. However, we haven’t seen the best from this young Cat by any stretch of the imagination. Guys like him are why Beechwood is always hunting titles, and why they have won so many. Enjoy the feature from our next ‘Break-out’ player for ’21. HB.
