Sylas Gunn (’26 ATH) was all over the field but, in the end, it wasn’t enough
We aren’t sure how many of you remember this but about three to four years ago Caldwell County Middle School cycled through a talent laden ball club which was a terror in the middle school ranks boasting plenty of talent all over the lineup. Those guys came up to the high school ranks and were green, young, and inexperienced for a few years. Well, young player mature, develop, and grow into good high school teams and that is what we saw on Morton’s Gap Friday night in the opener. However, the Storm will rebound on the road this next week and we are here to discuss the week that was and the one which will be.

Morton’s Gap, KY: Sylas Gunn (’26) had another solid night leading his troops on Morton’s Gap in a game which was much closer than the final margin (31-20). Games often turn on funny bounces and this one was no different. Suffice it to say, this game didn’t “feel” like a double digit margin. It was much closer.

Gunn threw for 92-yards and two (2) TDs against a lone pick on 7 for 17-passing in an effort which proved effective in the absence of the spectacular. Gunn was the team’s second leading rusher on the evening, carrying the football a dozen times for 67-yards.
Isac Earl (’26) scored a TD rushing in addition to catching a pass. Jeremiah Groves (’26) caught three passes and both of the TDs thrown by Gunn.
Kamran Harrison, who we just featured last week, paced the defense with 10-tackles. Gunn, also a defensive stalwart and being recruited by schools for defense and/or slot receiver, had nine (9) stops, including the team’s lone TFL.
Now, let's turn our attention to the trip to Elkton, KY and the game with Todd County Central (Rebels)...
The Storm is on the road this coming Friday (August 29, 2025) and there will be a “Rebel Horde” awaiting them. Todd County Central is coming off a 2-9, 2024 and are under new leadership in Coach Willem Cohen. Cohen will have some familiar tools in the tool chest.

The Rebels are paced by dual threat QB Braylon Elderbrook (’26). Elderbrook paced his squad in its opener both passing and rushing. Last year’s leading rusher, Jamir Brewer, is a ’27 guy who will be around both this year and next.
Two of the top three tacklers from a year ago departed by graduation. Mar’Shawn Fletcher (’27) returns to lead the Rebel Defense.
The Rebels won the opener in Barlow, Kentucky against Ballard Memorial. That game was a “down the wire” affair and the Rebels came away with a 32-28 victory.
Elkton, Kentucky is a fun place to watch a game
Friday Night Fletch
There is a huge difference in playing the Caldwell County Tigers versus the Ballard Memorial Bombers. The fact these teams have inapposite early season record (Central 0-1; Todd County Central 1-0) is meaningless this time of year.

If you have never been to Elkton, Kentucky to a ball game, please go. It is a small town, everybody come out and support the hometown team, atmosphere right off the pages of a Norman Rockwell cover of The Saturday Evening Post.
It will be a nice drive to the game. The drive back to Morton’s Gap will be even more fun. We like the Storm to even the season ledger, Friday night, by three (3) TDs.
