QB Controversy in Edgewood, KY?@mason_fields18 @GreggArmani1 @AlPopsFootball @minguabeefjerky

Colonels from Edgewood looking to improve on 5-7, ’23 mark

Armani Gregg (’25, 6’1,” 215-pound QB/ATH) looks to be locked up with Mason Fields (’26, 6’4,” 215-pound QB) in an old-fashioned, QB dual for the first team reps entering the ’24 season. Dixie Heights is coming off an uncharacteristically poor 5-7 worksheet and looking to get back to challenging for supremacy in the Northern Kentucky 5A scene. It would appear to us Coach Pat Burke would want to get this straightened out before Simon Kenton rolls into Edgewood for the August 23, 2024 opener.

What do you have when your roster contains a ’26 QB prospect who is 6’4,” 215-pounds, with a 3.6 GPA and enough talent to attend football camp at UT Chattanooga and come away impressing that school’s scouts (Mason Fields) and a 6’1,” 215-pound, dual-threat who is a ’25 guy and led your team, a year ago, in yards thrown, TDs-thrown, rushing yards, and rushing TDs (Armani Gregg)? We figure one Hell of a QB-controversy.

Entering the ’24 football season, little more than a few weeks away, the Dixie Heights Colonels (5A, D-6) find themselves right in the corner we have painted. Difference being, we don’t see how either decision is much of a loss for the team.

Sure Gregg is the more accomplished on paper. Gregg threw for 1,776-yards a 22-TDs a season ago. Gregg also gained 878-yards on the ground, in 134-rushing attempts, with 12-TDs by land. Gregg was the team’s leading scorer.

Fields’ statistics were much more pedestrian. Fields threw for 62-yards, completing 11-passes in 22-tries. He didn’t throw a TD but did throw a pick. However, Fields is the more statuesque of the two physically at 6’4,” 215-pounds.

UT-Chattanooga called Fields “An impressive looking riser on the radar that shined in several games this season and will be looking to have a 1000 yard, junior season for the Dixie Heights offense in 2024.” That wasn’t all the Mocs had to say about this prospect attending its camp.

The camp personnel also related, “Mason shined as one of the more impressive looking arms on the radar from the UT Chattanooga camp.” The Mocs called themselves, “[v]ery high on [Fields’] potential to be a very big talent out of Kentucky this season coming up.”

From our vantage point, we’re left with two impressively built, accomplished athletes competing for one post each with characteristics recommending him for the job. From the vantage point of the Colonels coaching staff, it’s a darn nice problem to have. Probably should move one of them to TE!
