’28 OL has visited Alabama

It is a little early to know about ’28 linemen and where they are likely to rank but we feel assured this guy will rank toward the top when the times comes. Not all ’28s are 6’8,” 295-pounds. John Paul Carrico is that tall, that long, that thick, and that good. Schools at the Division I level, from mid-major to Power 4, are noticing. We love the big-guy. Carrico’s 80-inch reach, 35-inch arm length, and even his 4.0-GPA all recommend him for big-time, next level play. Put his film on and you will see a tall lineman with sink (plays at an appropriate pad level), both nimble and active feet, and hand placement in the middle of the defender’s breast plate with his toes and thumbs both pointing down the field. Carrico plays over his feet, doesn’t lung often, and lets the defender come to him, not chasing, delivering a wilting punch once the defender arrives which generally doubles over the young man. No wonder the “Big Boys” are after him.

Owensboro, KY: Here we are, the day after Thanksgiving, and the Aces are still playing football. It seems we are here virtually every season.

Carrico, OL, 6’8,” 295

Tonight, the Aces have a tough, tough draw. Beechwood, a team accustomed to championship hardware, trips to Kroger Field, and practicing into early December, arrives at Steele Stadium with an appointent, perhaps with destiny.

The Tigers from Fort Mitchell, KY travel well. They don’t commit too many football trespasses this time of year.

One guy who will prove to be a handful is sophomore lineman, John Paul Carrico. Carrico is a familiar and hallowed name among Catholic fans. Just a few years ago, the Carricos had a pair of brothers (William and Vince) on whom we spilt quite a bit of ink covering. Both of them were fine players. So is John Paul.

Carrico has played in all 13 of Catholic’s games. With Carrico along the front line, the team has thrown for 3,808-yards and 49-TDs; rushed for 1,776-yards and 28-TDs; scored 553-points in 13-games; and posted a 12-1 mark.

Tonight the Aces will play for the right to go to Lexington and win a title. They will play a Beechwood team which has won 18 of them.

Carrico has the measurements college coaches crave. Carrico is 6’8″ tall. Carrico weighs a svelte-looking 295, meaning he can play with an additional 30-or so pounds on that frame without changing his appearance much less his mobility.

Carrico has an 80-inch reach. Having a reach like that (35-inch long arms) is essential to containing and picking up furious upfield pass rushers who are long on speed and loaded with twitch, special quickness, and brimming with hops.

Carrico has been offered by Louisville, UK, Miami (OH), EKU, and Murray State right now. We did mention Carrico is just now finishing up his sophomore season, right?

Carrico has some other major suitors not the least of which is Alabama’s Crimson Tide. The elephants just hosted Carrico, on campus, for a game not more than a few weeks ago.

Catholic enters the game tonight sporting an 12-1 record. Though Beechwood has won one fewer game (11), they too only have the one loss.

This game is at Steele Stadium in Owensboro. Beechwood will bus close to three and a half hours to get there.

That is a long bus ride. However, Beechwood travels and are accustomed to such trips at this time of year.

It would be a mistake for the Aces to expect anything less than the Tigers’s very best performance tonight. In the end, do the Aces have enough to march on to Lexington next week in search of a title?

We shall see. See you at the game!
