If you can’t appreciate how valuable a commodity an accomplished place kicker is to a high school football roster than you have obviously never coach high school football. It is called the third phase of football, special teams, and its players are referred to as “specialists.” When they are particularly skilled at what they are called upon to do, it is special, very special. Fort Campbell has one heck of a specialist in place kicker Jayden Couch. There is one other thing about Mr. Couch which is special; the fact he was only a freshman this past season.

Oak Grove, KY: There are three phases in a football game: offense, defense, and special teams. Programs who overly focus on one or two of the three always struggle and never achieve long term success.

I have served on staffs who didn’t give one darn about special teams. These staffs rarely practiced the kicking game, the coverage units, or the points after touchdowns and field goal units.

These staffs had one other thing in common. None of them ever went very far in the playoffs nor did they ever meet with anything apart from the most meager of success. If you can’t be bothered with special teams play, Coach; then, you might as well cross long-term success off the list too.

By golly, Coach Henry Mitchell, at Fort Campbell High School, understands the benefits of special teams play. His roster includes one of the best place-kickers in all the commonwealth of Kentucky and he will be entering his sophomore campaign in 2026.

His name is Jayden Couch. We have know idea if this prospect bears any relation to the “Couch” who played QB at Leslie County (Tim Couch). What we do know is the surname, “Couch,” is a fine one for any young man hoping to draw notoriety from playing HS football in the commonwealth of Kentucky.

Couch had a fine freshman year at place-kicker even for a youngster with his surname. Couch converted 23 of his 29 point after attempts and was one for one in field goals. That comes out to right at 80% on the one discipline and a perfect 100% on the other.

Couch scored 26-points his freshman season, good for 4th on the team’s scoring column. How many freshmen can lay claim to putting 26-points up on the board for a program boasting six (6) prior football titles?

The number would be fairly scant we would be willing to wager. There aren’t too many freshman, across Kentucky, who scored 26-points, a year ago, regardless of playing position or the program’s former championship pedigree.

Couch is a guy who should continue to improve as he develops and his frame matures. Not that he has very far to go. What he needs is more opportunity, the one part of the equation he really doesn’t control.

Fort Campbell has a challenge lying ahead. The Falcons graduate a ton of production including two All-Staters (Keshawn Dixon, JaCaryous Perryman) both of whom handled the ball significantly and accounted for a ton of both offensive and defensive numbers in 2025.

Coach Mitchell will be busy, this offseason, developing talent to replace that which will traipse across the graduation stage in just a few short months. Among the search for running backs, and other special talents the Falcons will be losing, at least there are some pieces returning.

QB, Tanner Walters, a dual threat guy, was only a sophomore last year. By season’s end, Walters was among the more lethal threats the roster contained. Walters return is cause for optimism; but, he is not alone.

I hear the Falcons have one Heck of a place-kicker! Rumor is it is some guy named “Couch.” For Falcon opponents, it is somewhat appropriate that name rhymes with “Ouch!”

Identifying potential scoring threats is tantamount to getting the Fort Campbell football team prepared for the challenges ahead. That is why this particular Falcon is our Lasaters Coffee & Tea, Wake Up and Smell the Coffee Player of the Week.
