Gregory helps Graves down Mayfield in season opener, 35-28 @KadenGregory9, @QBCoachFox, @MCScotsFootball, @lancegregory1

Gregory delivers...get used to saying just that...

Graves beats Mayfield for the fist time in sixteen years

Kaden Gregory is a ’25 QB who did something rather extraordinary on Friday night. Gregory threw for 274-yards and 4-TDs, but we aren’t talking about that. Gregory rushed for 61 rushing and a TD, but we aren’t talking about that either. Gregory led his charges, Graves County High, to its first win over Mayfield since the 2008 season. Now that is about what we have been talking! We are going to provide some additional perspective on this monumental victory, like only we can (or seem willing).

I am a huge Kenny Rogers fan. Sure, I am aware he has passed, but his music lives on and I still enjoy listening to the Silver Fox, a nickname my mother fashioned for him years ago.

She had a little crush on him. Don’t tell my dad.

Rogers recorded a song entitled, “Twenty Years Ago.” It was written by the team of Michael I. Noble, Dan Tyler, Michael Spriggs, and Wood Newton.

In the song, a guy goes through his hometown for the first time in twenty years. While walking through town, he starts reminiscing about what life was like then.

🎶It's been a long time since I walked through this old town
But, oh, how the memories start to flow
And there's the old movie house, they finally closed it down
You could find me there, every Friday night, twenty years ago...

I started singing through the lyrics of this wonderful song, Friday night (August 23, 2024). The Graves/Mayfield score had just been reported.

Graves had won this year’s renewal of the annual matchup, 35-28. It was the first time in 16 years Graves had won the game. Sixteen years isn’t exactly twenty, but it isn’t too distant either.

The last time Graves County beat Mayfield, a guy named Mike Rogers (we know of no consanguine relationship to Kenny Rogers) was coaching the Eagles. Graves County was a 6A, District 1 team. Mayfield was a 1A, District 1 team. Mayfield was coached by Joe Morris.

Graves finished 5-6, losing in the first round to Trinity High in Louisville (how about that playoff draw?), 59-3. Mayfield was 7-6, losing to Crittenden in the Regional Championship game, 26-13.

The last time Graves County beat Mayfield, George W. Bush was the 43rd President of the United States. The last time Graves beat Mayfield, Donald Trump was a real estate tycoon, a TV personality who made frequent cameos in movies and whose political aspirations weren’t assumed serious.

The last time Graves County beat Mayfield, the word pandemic referred to the Purple Death (Spanish Flu of 1918). Society had yet to hear of either Covid-19 or the Coronavirus.

Like Kenny Rogers sang, 🎶 Life was so much easier, twenty years ago…🎶

Courtesy of the Gregory family, Kaden in particular, we got treated to a trip down memory lane this past football Friday. Gregory’s game play was both brilliant and critical.

The undersized QB, who already sports an offer to play collegiately for Maryville College, threw for 274-yards and four (4) TDs. Gregory gained 61-yards rushing and scored a rushing TD.

The 5’11,” 175-pound ’25 signal caller bench presses 255-pounds, squats 435, power cleans 230, and carries a 4.0 GPA. The GPA, together with his other considerable talents, will go a long way toward Gregory’s getting where he wants to go in college, and in life.

For the Graves faithful, it had been a long time since they had walked through “this old town” known simply to them as Mayfield, Kentucky. However,…oh how the memories flowed. Particularly this past Friday night!
