Freshman All-Stater Kani Smith from Henderson is this week’s Revolutionary POW

This Week's Revolutionary Player of the Week (POW) is...

There is no better time than the present to anoint another Independence Bank player of the week. Independence Bank is proud to sponsor a weekly article highlighting players in the areas where Independence Bank flourishes who embody the same type of revolutionary service to their respective football teams which has made Independence Bank unique and special in the banking industry. Independence Bank has a goal of achieving everyday excellence, and this week we are focusing on a player whose performance exceeded both the Colonels’ and the Henderson County community’s expectations. We are focusing on the 5-8, 150 pound class of 2022, Freshman All-State Corner, Kani Smith. Smith plays for the Henderson County Colonels who are a first district, Class 6A football team located in the same county as three separate Independence Bank locations at 76 South Green Street; 1100 Barrett Boulevard; and in the Gardenside Shopping Center on 2610 Zion Road.

KPGFootball released it Freshman, All-State, Football team just this past week. It is the only freshman All-State Football team in Kentucky High School history and this is KPGFootball’s second year selecting and publishing it. We have been able to convene, for two years now, a Commonwealth-wide panel of coaches to assist in the selection of both teams, this year and last. The kids we honor with selection to the team aren’t kids who only see action in freshman and/or junior varsity games, as the statistics from those games are rarely kept and we would have to rely on speculation, to a large degree, in the team’s selection were we rewarding JV or Freshman play. Instead, we reward only those freshmen who we believe significantly contribute to his team on Friday night.

One of those freshman selected to this year’s team is also our Revolutionary Player of the Week, Kani Smith. Smith is a 5-8, 150 pound defensive back who saw Varsity run, this season, coming down the stretch for the Henderson County Colonels, who finished 7-5 this past season. The Colonels are a Class 6A, first district team playing football in Kentucky’s largest classification. Kani is a guy whose contributions may have seemed slight as a freshman but he figures to find his way into the starting lineup as soon as next year’s opener with his lightening quickness and ball skills, which have both offensive and defensive application. Kani, who figures to be a two-way player for the Colonels next season and thereafter, has a skill-set perfectly suited for either the backfield (RB) or at the slot (receiver), in addition to what he brings to the table defensively in coverage.

Congratulations to Kani Smith for the Revolutionary Play which has both landed him on the KPGFootball, Freshman All-State Football team and earned him this week’s recognition from the fastest growing bank in the Commonwealth of Kentucky…your friends at Independence Bank.
