You won’t find a bigger player in the ’25 class if you scour the entire commonwealth. Jaycob Davis, at 6-4, 405-pounds, will be called upon to play early and often at a 1A program on the western end of Kentucky which produces quite a lot of talent. The Hoptown Tigers are LOADED! We had an agent at the Tigers scrimmage with Class 6A McCracken and they came away impressed. Their words reporting back to the office at the first of the week were, “These guys look all the way back to me…like mid-90s back!” That is saying quite a bit. It also means we likely had a serious omission from our preseason Top-5 in the 4A classification. However far the Tigers go this coming season, they will lean heavily on Daisjaun Mercer, this week’s award recipient for the reasons we have detailed herein. Friday night we have season openers so this is our last offseason award. It is all over but the crying now. Join us next week as we give this award to another worthy recipient. HB.
His is one of Kentucky High School football’s better nicknames. Enjoy this feature about Martrell “Night Train” Horton. Horton is one of the more dynamic and explosive players in Kentucky 5A football particularly in Louisville. Horton plays for Fairdale High School and the Bulldogs figure to be quite good again in ’21. HB.
The words, “the best…” can get thrown around and excessively used. No outfit is anymore aware of this than we. In the end, it amounts to a bunch of hyperbole and little more most times. Right off the bat you have to love the personality of any lineman who choses to wear “00” as a number. This is a young ’26 prospect who has the type of frame which indicates there is literally no telling how big he gets in the end. He seems to have plenty of length and good feet and athleticism right now, which is something you don’t always find in “bigs” his age. Enjoy the feature. HB.
The Independence Bank Revolutionary Player of the Week Award is among the commonwealth’s oldest and most respected weekly awards. Of course, Mr. Football is the ultimate award for any high school player in Kentucky to win. It is a huge honor just to be in the running. This week’s Revolutionary Player has been named to the preseason “Watch List” for Mr. Football. That is quite an honor. So is winning this. Here are five (5) freshmen we believe will play this coming year. Some of these guys play for lower level teams which routinely challenge for titles at the respective classifications and others play for teams playing in large classifications where freshmen rarely see Friday Night action. An agent of the magazine was at this scrimmage which was “Meet the Cougars” night at Letcher Central. The Cougars got to meet one of Breathitt’s more potent offensive weapons for the ’21 season in Isaac “Wheels” Turner. Turner was scintillating in this scrimmage and gave a foreshadowing of what kind of threat he poses opposing defenses on the schedule in ’21. We believe Knox Story from Mayfield will offer the Cardinals some steady and consistent play along the offensive front in ’21. It would be hard to imagine a prospect at either WR or OLB in Kentucky’s ’22 class who more “looked the part” than Shyhiem Drew. At 6-5, 210-pounds with tons of athleticism and length, he certainly looks the part of a “big-time” football star and prospect. His performance, thus far, hasn’t been what one would expect but we believe his best football is ahead of him. A college will give him the opportunity to hone his skills, either on the hardwood or the gridiron, and if properly developed some lucky school will be getting quite a catch. Enjoy the feature. HB.
