Coach Chris Ezell would be the first to tell you it all starts upfront with any high school football team. The Trigg County Wildcats got off to an incredibly hot start this opening weekend with a 54-0 trouncing of Ohio County in the Wildcat Chevrolet Bowl. Coach Moeller’s 5A squad took on a “David” and got “Goliath-ed,” translation; a stone, right between the eyes. Aiden Goodwin (OC) and his line mates (LT-Thye White, LG-Quin Baggett, RG-Jayden Swaw, RT-John Oliver) opened some big holes and were able to stake Davaree Gude to a huge rushing night (5-carries, 116-yards). If these guys can do similarly over the remainder of the season, and stay healthy, this could be one whale of an upcoming season.

Friday Night Fletch

Cadiz, KY: All offense begins and ends upfront. The key to a good offense is the play of the five guys leading the way and protecting the “playmakers.”

Aiden Goodwin

We report on and celebrate offensive line play way more than the standard high school football site. Most sites sit around and wax eloquently about the play of the skills and the yards and touchdowns these guys scored without ever a mention of the guys on whose backs the yards were gained and the touchdowns scored.

There were publications last year who put forward all-state football teams comprised completely of skills; not a lineman on the team. These guys don’t know enough about the sport to report on it.

Aiden Goodwin is a “Good ‘un.” Goodwin is a tough, undersized, interior guy who is tailor-made for the high school game. At 6’0,” 220-pounds the first thing you notice about Goodwin is “…where’s his neck?”

Goodwin is quick, with a reliable snap, who snaps and power steps simultaneously. He very rarely misfires. He very rarely permits A-gap penetration. He makes the right calls and has his guys in the correct protections.

Interior OL like Goodwin are the backbone of any good KHSAA football team

Friday Night Fletch

Goodwin re-establishes the line of scrimmage behind the linebacker, or 2nd, level. This accounts for some of the bodacious rushing statistics and point totals boasted by the Wildcat offense.

Trigg County is very good in its first string. The ball club can ill afford injury as the depth is somewhat wanting.

In spite of that, Goodwin and his mates cleared the way for 54-points scored, with hundreds of yards both rushing and passing. If these guys can keep this going, Hart County may be in for a speck of trouble this coming Friday night.

Next up for the Wildcats (1-0) are the Hart County Raiders (3A, 0-1). Hart County is coming off an opening loss to Logan County (4A) in Russellville, KY. Hart County was 12-1 in 2024, losing to Union County at home in the Regional Championship game.

Hart County lost quite a bit of run production to graduation but have Jacob Shoulders (AB/DB) back to trigger the offense as he did a year ago. We talked with veteran OC for Trigg County, Rusty Goble. Coach Goble told us, “Hart County will be a challenge and we will have to play mighty well to stay in the game with the Raiders.”

Goble continued, “We get to entertain them on our home field, and are thankful for that. We have a skilled lineup to take into the matchup.”

Goble concluded with, “We need everyone to come out and support this effort this coming Friday night.”

As for Goodwin and his offensive line crew, they all plan to be in attendance. They will be doing what they do…opening holes and protecting the QB from an all-out, onslaught of pressure and Raiders arriving at the ball carriers both angrily and while brimming with ill-intention.

You know what the old timers tend to say…”You’re only as good as you are upfront…” Who said that? We just did!

We can’t make it any simpler than that. We’ll see you at the game!
