Mr. Jones and Me, Counting Crows as the Season Approaches @minguabeefjerky, @840WHAS, @KyHighFootball, @davidjones_7

All eyes are on Jones, Jr.

’28 WR/DB will play his HS football at Woodford County

David Jones, Jr. may be the best player at his positions in Kentucky’s ’28 class, commonwealth-wide. Those of us who remember his father’s days at Belfry, UK, and then in the NFL aren’t the least bit surprised. Jones is 6’1,” slightly built at 145, very lengthy, and with really good speed for a rising freshman (4.7-second, 40) who has experienced success playing the game (2X City Champs in Lexington). Will this kid crack the lineup sometime over his freshman campaign in Versailles, Kentucky playing for Dennis Johnson’s Yellow Jackets of Woodford High? We wouldn’t bet against him!

Versailles, KY: There is a saying with which most people profess being familiar. That saying is “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

We use it to describe sons who we believe will equal or surpass famous fathers. It has been attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson, and dated from 1839. Emerson, of course, is among America’s best known, 19th century, literary figures.

David Jones, Sr. could ball a little

This saying has applicability, and persistent use, in the sport of football. We use it all the time in describing sons of football star fathers. It is being “dusted off” for use here, and equally applicable.

David Jones is a well known figure among University of Kentucky football faithful. He challenged for “Mr. Football” and won a championship for the KHSAA’s all-time wins leader, Phillip Haywood, at Belfry when he, himself, was a prep-star.

Jones matriculated to UK, was elected captain, and for years was the only Wildcat to return a punt or kick-off 100-yards for a TD in a bowl game. Jones was on the Baltimore Ravens team which won Super Bowl XLVII in 2013.

That is not to say Jones, Jr., the topic of this feature, hasn’t accomplished plenty at this stage of his development. Jones, Jr. has won two Lexington championships in MS, has played for Team KY, and has impressed our scouts with his talent and ball-hawking skills all while attending EJ Hayes Middle School.

Friday Night Fletch

“Little” Jones will play his high school football at Woodford County High for another Kentucky legend, Dennis Johnson. We would wager Coach Johnson is excited about this addition to the roster for the upcoming season.

Jones has a lengthy, tall frame, for his stage of physical development. He is 6’1,” 145-pounds, and virtually all arms and legs.

Jones runs a blistering 4.7-second, 40-yard dash. Jones has soft hands, runs disciplined routes, covers the back-third defensively like his Dad (ball hawk), and has already rocketed up our list of ’28s Kentucky-wide.

Now we are “Counting Crows” fans, particularly their hit song, “Mr. Jones and Me.” It was released in 1993, well before this particular “Mr. Jones” was a thought.

However, to borrow from that song’s chorus, we easily foresee this Mr. Jones “…smiling through the bright lights/Coming through in stereo…” on Kentucky’s biggest and brightest Friday Night stages. This guy here will be a star as assuredly as this magazine peerlessly covers this topic.

Yessir, let us assure this “Mr. Jones,” that “[w]hen everybody loves you/You can never be lonely…” If Junior would like that confirmed, all he has to do is ask Dad.
