’27 player helped his team to an incredible seasonal run his final tour
Well, the Falcons took the game on the road in the first round of the playoffs and the outcome was what many of us, around Kentucky, expected. Owensboro Catholic is simply a perennial title contender at the 2A level and in the title hunt again this season after finishing last season walking off Kroger Field on the short end of a 50-34 score at the hands of 18-time, KHSAA champion, Beechwood. Needless to say, Fort Campbell isn’t Beechwood, not yet anyway. However, the Falcons had a very solid season, made the playoffs, and beat most of the teams it was slated to beat. Overall, it was a very solid year and a very well-coached unit by Henry Mitchell which overcame some significant obstacles as the year progressed. Kyre Ferguson (’27) enjoyed a tremendous year too and is our recipient this week.

Oak Grove, KY: If we are telling the truth, there probably wasn’t a single person outside the Falcon locker room who thought the Fort Campbell HS football team was going to travel to Owensboro and eliminate Catholic High. Owensboro Catholic is coming off a ’24 finals appearance, and were riding a 9-1, regular season performance into the first round game.

Marshall Patterson
It was a one-seed versus four-seed matchup. The four-seed doesn’t have very good odds to emerge from such a confrontation.
Over the course of the regular season, Catholic had beaten 5As, Bowling Green and Apollo, 6As Daviess County and Meade County, 4A Elizabethtown, and 3A Bardstown. Catholics lone set back was by 13 points to 5A Owensboro (Senior) High. The “Red Devils” among the commonwealth’s wines all-time programs is sitting 9-2, the winners of nine (9) straight games, and among the top 5As in the KHSAA with an RPI ranked 2nd to Pulaski County in the classification. No shame losing to those guys, Catholic.
Kyre Ferguson (’27) had a heck of a season. On the year, Ferguson had three (3) picks with a “pick six” covering 94 yards. Ferguson contributed 118-IRNYs, 13-tackles, 12-receptions, and a carry from scrimmage in just 7-games of action.
Ferguson’s 94-yard pick-six happened when the team needed it most. Playing Trigg County in the regular season’s last game, in a “win or its basketball season” game, Ferguson picked a pair of passes including the one he housed. Big players come up big-time in big moments.

There were some mighty big time performers for the Falcons in the ’25 season. Keshawn Dixon was among the better RBs in the commonwealth at his level of play, JaCaryous Perryman proved there was virtually no limit to the ways he could contribute to the bottom line, and Tanner Walters development at QB freed up the coaching staff to better use and exploit some of its versatile athletic talent.
Another player from whom big-things are expected going forward, and whose performance flew “under the radar” some this season is ’27, two-way, lineman Sam Suapilimai. Suapilimai, whom we recognized a week ago (and fed) is an OT/DE whose contributions to the season can’t be discounted or overlooked.
Going into the game with Owensboro Catholic, Suapilimai graded out nearly 90% on his play along the front and made plays in the offensive backfield on defense which put opponents behind the sticks and got the defense off the field. When you have the backfield numbers we saw from the Falcons this season, the “big-boys” are getting it done.
Ferguson had a big year, including a 94-yard “pick six” in an all-important game!

Performances like Ferguson, a little known senior who came into the year with little fanfare or ballyhoo, are really important to building the Falcon program back to where it has historically been. It’s those guys who come up big for the team about whom opponent scouting reports don’t know much who are in a position to make all the difference, many times, on Friday night.
Suapilimai is among the more popular members of the Fort Campbell football program. We have even seen a T-shirt for sale emblazoned with his picture. We were thinking about ordering one. We wear a 2XL in case he would like to send one to us.
We talked to head football coach, Henry Mitchell, about his young big. He told KPGFootball, “Suapilimai is both massive and massively strong player who uses his strength and leverage well. Suapilimai has excellent feet.”
Ferguson was that guy for Fort Campbell this past season. Ferguson was primarily thought of as a defender but he contributed enough offensively to make him a player for whom the opposing coaches had to account.
Fort Campbell’s football program is headed in an upward trajectory, in the direction the Falcon faithful both expect and want to see. Mitchell’s staff is doing much with little, roster wise, with an aim toward developing more depth and quality players in the near future. Ferguson is the “poster child” for this development plan. The Falcons have the pieces sufficient to sneak up on higher rated opponents and send them home if overlooked or lightly regarded. The game plan, from this point forward, is to graduate from the being the hunted back to being the hunters.

There are certain undeniable “truths” in the game of football. Among those are when you have big time talent handling the ball in the offensive backfield, with big time talent upfront you will always have a chance on Friday night. The Falcons are getting there.
Evidence the Falcons are making the necessary strides is even more apparent where the roster contains some of the athletes and pieces at the disposal of Coach Mitchell and his staff. Identifying a potential weapon like Kyre Ferguson should certainly help get future Falcon squads prepared for the challenges ahead. That is why Kyre Ferguson is our Lasaters Coffee & Tea, Wake Up and Smell the Coffee Player of the Week.

That being said we felt it was high time for people around Oak Grove, KY (Fort Campbell High) to take notice of this outstanding performer and outstanding young man. Hey Fort Campbell, as far as Kyre Ferguson is concerned; it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee!
In an effort to help this prospect’s continued development, Kyre Ferguson may go, this Friday (November 14, 2025), to any of our area locations and be served a free drink of his choice and free breakfast or other sandwich/food item.
