’26 OLB and Small School Big Ass Fans All-Stater commits to Brown University

John Luke Minner was among the best linebackers in Kentucky last season. Matter of fact, he made our Big Ass Fans, Small School, All-State Defense a year ago. Well, the rising senior has just committed to Brown University of the Ivy League (FCS, Division I) to play collegiately. If that isn’t worthy of some recognition, I don’t know what would be.

Lexington, KY: Sayre School in Lexington, KY is a small school. It competes at the 1A level and is coming off a championship run in ’24 which would see the program post a perfect 15-0 season.

Along the way a year ago, Sayre had to beat a pair of seven (7) win teams in Paris and Pikeville, an 11-win team in Campbellsville, and a 10-win Raceland squad for the title just to take home the hardware. Pikeville is a multi-time champion, having won previous football titles at 1A in 2011, ’15, ’18, ’19, ’20, ’21, ’22, and ’23.

Twenty, Twenty-Four (2024) was a down year for Pikeville. Seven and Six (7-6) aside, Pikeville is still Pikeville.

Sayre boasted some of the finest talent anywhere in Kentucky on its roster and still does. One player who made our Big Ass Fans, Small School All-State team a year ago was Sayre’s John Luke Minner.

Minner is 6’3,” weighs in at the 225-230 range, and sports a 4.2 GPA at the prestigious private school in Lexington. His grades impressed none other than Brown University who was equally impressed with his football game play.

Minner is well put together and that 4.2 GPA certainly speaks for itself

Friday Night Fletch

What’s not to like? In ’24, Minner had 40-tackles, 3-TFLs, 10-sacks, and forced a pair of fumbles (2-FFs). That is 10-sacks with everyone in the stadium expecting him to provide much of the heat and with every opposing scouting report detailing the need to run to the OTHER SIDE!

While we don’t have any lifting numbers on the young man, we do have a picture we have included. He’s obviously put together. Just like you want a linebacker to be constructed.

Minner has a huge year upcoming. Minner would like to take his Spartans back for title number two before hearing off to Providence Rhode Island.

This kid is a leader. This kid is a stud, Division I football player. This kid has committed to be an Ivy Leaguer.

If that isn’t worthy of an award like this, then what is? That is a good question.

Maybe we should ask the Ivy Leaguer. He’s smart enough to know the answer. What do you think?
