@drew_johnson (Drew Johnson) from @BJNFBALL (Somerset HS) is second to none

We have lots of subscribers who have, over the years, virtually become family to us. This is especially true of Somerset High School’s offensive line coach, George Hatcher, who has continued to support us even though his own son, Peyton, has moved on to the bright lights of college football.

Of course, old-George still hasn’t mastered the Chinese riddle that is setting up a username and password (by his own admission), but he still supports us nevertheless. We will be emailing him this story shortly after it publishes.

When George Hatcher tells us he has a player, we listen. He has been coaching football (seemingly) since the open face, leather helmet days. George called us and said, “Hey listen, this Drew Johnson I got over here at Somerset can play. He’s really something.”

We took a long look at Drew. We agree with George.

When the BGR poster, A.K.A. BoyleCo. published the preseason top-30 lineman list, Drew came in as the 2nd-rated offensive center and the 15th-highest regarded O-Lineman overall, all classes.

Drew could just as easily been No. 1 at OC and well up into the Top-10 overall in our opinion. This kid takes a backseat to no one. We have linked his highlights under his picture, take a look for yourself.

Johnson is 6-3 and reports weighing 265-pounds. He has plenty of frame to stock additional weight.

Johnson is smart (being recruited by Centre College, enough said). Drew Johnson is a technician who always seems to make the appropriate run or protection call (George Hatcher trained, enough said, again).

Drew is drawing looks at all levels of competition. Johnson is drawing attention from Kentucky Wesleyan, Centre College, all the way up the ladder to D-I the likes of Indiana State University and Eastern Kentucky. There is not a level of football too high for his talent and ability, it will just be a matter of how soon he wants to see the field.

In the meantime, Johnson returns for his senior year without many of his line-mates from off of last year’s team returning. Don’t be fooled by that, Somerset was the deepest team in the classification a year ago and they have people ready to plug-in and seamlessly contribute.

They also have a QB committed to The Big Blue returning as well as a bevy of his favorite targets. Somerset will be very tough and right in the thick to repeat as Football Champions of 2A.

The BriarJumpers play in the classification’s toughest district, by far. They will (once again) have to contend with Danville High School, Class 2A Football Champions as recently as 2017, and a Lexington Christian team we’ve been calling the finest collection of underclassmen in Kentucky for a couple years.

Somerset split a pair of games with Lexington Christian a year ago and both contests came down to the bitter end. The former-underclassmen are all grown up now, and they will be formidable.

In any event, the best thing to have, when breaking in some new upfront starters is an accomplished, talented, tough, and salty veteran around whom to build. Drew Johnson gives Somerset, and our old friend George Hatcher, exactly that.

The old man couldn’t have drawn-up a prospective rebuild any more perfectly than this. Don’t throw George Hatcher in that briar patch!
