Independence Bank has a goal of achieving everyday excellence, and this week we are focusing on a player whose performance both has and continues to exceed the Cougars’ and McClean County, Kentucky community’s expectations. We are focusing on the class of 2019, TE/DE, Colton Johnson, from McClean County, Kentucky.
Johnson attends McClean County High School. The closest Independence Bank branch to Johnson’s high school lies approximately 7.9 miles from Calhoun, traveling down KY-136E, in neighboring Livermore, Kentucky. Mark Twain once had some insulting things to say about statistics. At Independence Bank, we realize our customers are way more than any statistic, at least to us. Statistics don’t always tell the whole tale anyway.
For instance, this weeks Revolutionary Player of the Week, Colton Johnson, primarily played TE for the Cougars this past season, although he played defensively too. Now, he may have only caught 2 passes on the year for 31 yards, but that is deceptive owing to the fact the leading receiver only caught 9 passes. The entire team had 25 receptions. Heck, Johnson was the team’s fourth leading receiver in 2018.
What doesn’t show up in the stats book, or at least not so much attributed to Johnson’s TE deployment, is the contribution Johnson made, with his 6-3 and 245 pound-frame, as the O-line’s sixth member. The Cougars gained 318.5 yards with 4 rushing TDs every game on average running behind a front on which Johnson’s play was instrumental.
On defense, our recipient registered 29 tackles, a tackle for a loss, and a QB-sack-and-a-half. Those numbers are solid for someone primarily used on offense throughout the season.
Regardless, the Cougars were wildly successful in 2018. Coach Wagner’s Class 2A, District 2, cats clawed their way to an 8-4 season which ended at Mayfield in the playoff’s second round. Let me assure you lots of seasons end in Mayfield, Kentucky.
We believe Colton Johnson’s play will be wildly missed next year, though we fully expect McLean to challenge Owensboro Catholic for the district crown in 2019. Players, like customers, can’t be merely measured by numbers. Regardless of what the statistics did or didn’t relate about Johnson’s play in 2018, we believe this will be one player whose contributions will be sorely missed on Friday nights. Particularly when the Cougar-faithful realize he’s no longer out there.

Colton received a full scholarship from Campbellsville University here in Kentucky. He will be playing football for Campbellsville this fall. We are very proud of Cokton’s academics as well as his athletics!
Way to go Colton. Of course we don’t cover academics as we are a football magazine but we are thrilled to hear he will be continuing his education and athletic careers at Campbellsville. They are bringing in a super class.
