We called this Pennebaker kid going off in a preseason article written about the likely top five in ’23 in the 1A classification. Holy Cross has underperformed a little, though the only performance which counts is on the brink of commencing, but Pennebaker has been on the money. We believe in Coach Eric Dick’s Cougars and wouldn’t be surprised for them to hang around a while in the playoffs. Ballard certainly knows something about developing top-flight talent at DE. Remember Jadairion Smith? We sure do. Ballard is now 6-3 with Woodford County remaining and Mikel Clack is the new “Jadairion Smith.” Clack leads the commonwealth in sacks and has a long frame, albeit slight, but he can really move. Ballard is staring down the barrel of a 7-3 finish, and with the 7th-highest RPI in the class, the 6A, 5th district Bruins hope to host to host an opening game. Friday Night Fletch

Bryce Button, a ’25 QB at South Warren in Bowling Green, KY, over the first seven (7) games of this ’23 season has been the very picture of Swiss-made precision. Last week he completed close to 80% of his passing attempts and threw for four (4) TD’s against 0-picks. Every time we see Central’s 6’2,” 240-pound FB we think, “McNary on the Carry.” When you see him around Hopkins County, try it! He broke several career marks in his fine career last Friday against Trigg County. His night against Trigg alone was jerky-worthy. Throw in the career marks, and it really isn’t close. Mercer will have many pieces back next year, particularly on defense, but the McKinney, season ending injury in the game with Southwestern was heart-breaking.
