’27 CB/FS looks like he has the tools for success
It takes some time to get on the field for a big-time, 6A high school. They don’t come any bigger than attempting to crack the lineup at Male High. Male was 9-3 a year ago and lost in the second round to cross-town, Ballard. Bowing out in round two is a bad year for Male High. Male routinely factors into the title chase at the 6A level. BJ Flowers and the young talent percolating throughout the roster will have something to say about the future of the Bulldog dynasty.

Louisville, KY: Male High went 9-3 in ’24, losing by a single score to Ballard High in the second round of the Kentucky 6A playoffs. That isn’t too bad for most programs. Male isn’t “most programs.”
Male has won football championships in Kentucky which predate the KHSAA’s holding state football championships. The KHSAA began hosting title games in 1959.
All-told, Male is credited with 15 Kentucky High School football championships, eight (8) of which occurred after 1959. Male won titles in 1924, 1937, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1951, 1954, 1960, 1963, 1964, 1993, 1998, 2000, 2015, and 2018.
So you will have to forgive head coach, Chris Wolfe, if his staff and he aren’t exactly celebrating a second round exit in the ’24 playoffs. Since winning its last title in 2018, Male has played for the title in 2019, ’20, ’21, and ’22.
There are expectations when playing for Male High. Those expectations are,…well, very high!

BJ Flowers is a kid who excelled a year ago on JV. Flowers registered 20 or so tackles and picked three passes by our count. JV statistics are hard to track. Sometimes varsity statistics are too.
BJ is 5’10,” 168-pounds. He plays corner and free safety. He has good speed and some length on a frame lacking somewhat in height.
BJ will be a junior in ’25. While many players tend to find the varsity field as sophomores, the same isn’t necessarily true of players at programs like Trinity, St. Xavier, and Male High.
Families know they are trading early playing time for opportunities for championship rings at programs of such stature. We believe Male will be in the title hunt in ’25 largely because the last time we checked they were still the Bulldogs, there were still wearing purple, and they were still Louisville Male.
Sometimes that is all we sports journalists need to know about places like Male. Then again, what do we know?
