Back the old days, coaches generally (particularly in high school) would take the best athlete and make him the QB. After all, let your best athlete handled the ball most of the time, right? Coach McPeek is familiar. He’s been around a while. Last year, the year before hiring McPeek, Eminence High had Deegan Ortega at QB. While there he threw for three TDs, ran for five scores, was the second leading scorer and contributed some tackles along the way. What is in store for ’26? You may see Ortega at QB some more but we believe his next level home will be at WR or DB. He is 6’2,” 180, carries a 3.3-GPA, and is one of the best athletes on any field he enters. The Chargers are not too many years removed from winning a 6A title (2022) in football. Bullitt East didn’t contend in ’25 (7-5) but it isn’t like they were a bad ball club either. The Chargers beat Fern Creek (Lou.) and North Hardin (Elizabethtown) while dropping games to Boyle and Franklin Counties, Manual, Male, and St. Xavier (the last three among the toughest opponents the Derby City can muster in its 6A classification). The Chargers are going to need consistent and reliable QB play in 2026 and we believe we know where they might find that and more. Enjoy this feature.
