This usually is a pretty fun article. A few days ago we posted the “KPGFootball Scorecard.” On that document we memorialized the matchup and just who we believed would win and why. What we do in the scorecard is give you the solution. What we don’t do is demonstrate how we worked the problem. Thursdays, during the football season, we often publish an article which “shows our math.” If you read this article you will see why we picked the teams we picked to win and why we picked the teams we picked to lose. There are usually plenty of skill guys around a 6A program. That is the benefit of having such large enrollments in a sparsely populated state or commonwealth like Kentucky. The 6A programs which thrive are the programs which can produce and develop big men like Alex Schuster. When you have an All-State QB like Zane Johnson, the last thing a program needs is to permit easy access to him right up the A-Gap. So Trinity, the standard for 6A football in the commonwealth, protects its investment with a 300-pound interior guy with a 495-pound back squat and a 750-pound pull. Great idea! Today’s feature about a kid who is as good at the center slot as one might see in the Derby City. We call these the Seven-Eleven. We have identified seven small school players and 11-large school studs all of whom will move the needle considerably this coming Fall. These are the guys who, if they are ’27s, will be in the “Mr. Football” race, and if they are younger will be serious threats for post season accolades. These teams are the teams who will make deep playoff runs, if not win championships, next season too. In the world of Kentucky high school football, a world about which we are undoubtedly familiar, the Trinity/St. Xavier game is often referred to as “The Game.” It is so big neither on campus stadium is viewed as sufficient to host the event. This is why it gets annually played at the stadium which hosts University of Louisville football games instead. This year neither team has lost a game to a Kentucky high school. That changes this weekend. We have taken a deep dive into the matchup, done our homework/research, and have forecast a winner. Let’s see how closely we get this or if we miss altogether. We see these hot-shot, gun slinger QBs come out of MS and look to challenge an incumbent for snaps every so often. It isn’t every year, but every five (5) or so years wouldn’t be a stretch. I once had a former college, SEC QB tell me the most popular position on any football team is the 2nd-string QB. If you think about it, it makes sense. Austin Jacobson is the best MS QB we have seen come down the pipe in a few years. He reminds us of Zane Johnson (Trinity) who defied all odds to lead the Shamrocks to the 6A title in 2023. Mason Trimble returns for St. Xavier and the rising junior had a very good season and looks to be getting some “Mr. Football” pub entering the ’25 opener. Trimble won’t hand the kid this job. However, should it get to the point his services are immediately needed, one could do much, much worse. Enjoy the feature.

It is that time of year. It is time to start figuring which teams, entering the ’25 season, figure to factor in the title chase. We have detailed what we think here and it is based on our study of the incoming, ’25 rosters, what players return, what players graduated, and other various factors we have perfected through the years to render such predictions. We plan to do this for all of Kentucky’s six (6) classifications and there is no guarantee we will go in order from the top down, or the bottom to the top. There are good football teams in the KHSAA and there are bad ones and those teams span all of the six classes. Enjoy today’s look at 6A.
