Back the old days, coaches generally (particularly in high school) would take the best athlete and make him the QB. After all, let your best athlete handled the ball most of the time, right? Coach McPeek is familiar. He’s been around a while. Last year, the year before hiring McPeek, Eminence High had Deegan Ortega at QB. While there he threw for three TDs, ran for five scores, was the second leading scorer and contributed some tackles along the way. What is in store for ’26? You may see Ortega at QB some more but we believe his next level home will be at WR or DB. He is 6’2,” 180, carries a 3.3-GPA, and is one of the best athletes on any field he enters. Not all hires are created equally. From our vantage point, and looking just at the numbers, the McPeek hire at Eminence High looks like a solid hire. Garry McPeek has a world of coaching experience, where he has experienced success and won championships from the Kentucky 1A all the way up to the professional ranks (Arena Football League).
