Larry French has one of the better “coaching trees” among the all-time greats across Kentucky. French’s tree includes Jean Rollins, Larry Mofield, Chuck Smith, Clay Clevenger, Brad Hood, David Buchanan, and Jack Robertson. Several of these guys have been featured in this magazine. At least two of them have been featured in our “Slow Motion Replay” which was designed to highlight the all-time guys. David Buchanan’s dad, John, hired Ed Rall at Boyle and Larry French at Mercer…. both guys right out of college, so French was even mentored by and all-timer and coached with several others. Enjoy this look at KY’s third winningest coach, all-time, and a guy likely to join the 400+ wins club before too much longer.

Cam Alsip is the type of high school player we LOVE to cover. He’s a hard worker, kills it in the weight room, all the while looking like a mild mannered, Academic team member. Yeah, Clark Kent didn’t look like much either, at least not in glasses. This kid is busting his tail to get better and it will translate onto the field. With 15-TFLs, 6.5 sacks, and five (5) FFs in ’24, how much better can this kid possibly get? I feel sorry for the kids trying to block this monster. Enjoy the feature.

Kris Hughes is a “Dude.” If you are unfamiliar with that term and its meaning, you need to read our book. There is a link at the bottom of his article. Hughes scored 29-TDs in multiple phases of the game in ’24 as a junior. He picked a pair of passes, housing one for a “pick-six.” He is also the 5th leading rusher and scorer in Somerset history and we are talking about one of the more accomplished histories in the KHSAA. What will he do for an encore? He just may win ’25’s Mr. Football, that’s what. Kris Hughes is one bad bunny. Matter of fact, we can’t find where we have before featured him and that is somewhat alarming to us. Hughes had a tremendous sophomore season for first-year head coach Clay Clevenger and he looks to have the Briar Jumpers back on the title track, if last year’s trip to the semis, and 10-4 finish, are any indication.
