Robert Edwards from @AthertonFootbal is the @1776Bank Revolutionary Player of the Week. @Minguabeefjerky @PrepSpin @KyHighFootball @atherton_high

There is no better time than the present to anoint another Independence Bank Player of the WeekIndependence Bank is proud to sponsor a weekly article highlighting players in the areas where Independence Bank flourishes who embody the same type of revolutionary service to their respective football teams which has made Independence Bank unique and special in the banking industry.

Independence Bank has a goal of achieving everyday excellence, and this week we are focusing on a player at Atherton High School in Louisville, Kentucky who made the absolute most out of limited chances. This week we are highlighting the play of Class of 2023’s Robert Edwards.

Edwards’ Atherton High School is not too far from the famous St. Matthews Square branch of Independence Bank. St. Matthews Square is on 3901 Shelbyville Road in Louisville. Now we are pretty good friends with the head man at Atherton High School. His name is Anthony White and we all call him “Nino.”

When we called him about Edwards, he literally bubbled with enthusiasm about the Class of 2023 prospect. “Robert Edwards is a baller. He will definitely be a stud. He played much older for us this past season than being a sophomore.”

Atherton only got to play 6-games in 2020. Edwards only played in 5 of those.

A lot of the public schools in Jefferson County were shorted this past season owing to spending so much time in the “red.” Decades from now, when the COVID-19 global health crisis is a “thing of the past,” people are going to wonder what “in the red” meant.

Basically, if you had a high number of infected people in your county, per 100,000 residents, you were assigned the color “red,” which was the worst designation. Most counties, like Jefferson, wouldn’t let teams play when the county was in the red. Atherton was far from the only Louisville, public-school casualty.

However, this didn’t hurt Edwards’ production. Edwards still registered 44-tackles (33-solos), with 7-of those being TFLs and an 8th-play being a QB-sack. In addition to the above, Edwards had 2 FFs and a FR. For five games worth of opportunity, that is really fine production.

Edwards is a 6-0, 215-pound young guy with plenty of growing to do, one would figure. He was selected All District at DE and was 2nd-Team All PAC Conference selection in 2020.

Edwards is a 2-year starter, having also started at Atherton as a freshman. Starting varsity football as a freshman is quite an accomplishment in and of itself at the 5A level.

Coach White told KPGFootball that Edwards is a, “hard-nosed, football player. [Edwards is also a] great down hill runner, with power and speed. [Edwards] has the ability, on defense, to shut down an side.”

Congratulations to Robert Edwards, both for his Revolutionary Play in 2020 and that which is to come in 2021, all of which has earned him this week’s recognition from the fastest growing bank in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, your friends at Independence Bank.
