KPGFootball’s Weekly Winners, here’s 20 winners for you for the September 20th games!

This week, we followed last week’s practice of limiting our predictions to 20 of the top rivalry games or most compelling matchups across the commonwealth of Kentucky. We have done the research, we are going 20-0 this week. Here we go…

Saint Xavier HS vs. Bowling Green…

Saint X got absolutely hammered by Louisville Male. Of course Male, second only to Trinity, is Kentucky’s elite program right now. However, to be elite you can’t let anyone, EVER, beat you like that. Bowling Green is now being coached by a man who was Coach Wallace’s DC when Wallace was at BG. This should be one whale of a game. We like Saint Xavier.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Saint Xavier

Caverna vs. Todd County…It is amazing what Darrel Keith has done at Todd County Central, a high school most people on the eastern end of Kentucky didn’t realize until recently was even a high school. Todd is 4-0 and has Owensboro Catholic looming. Usually upsets occur when teams look past the present team to look ahead to the one upcoming. Good thing Todd County Central is a bazillion times better than Caverna. Todd pushes its mark this season to 5-0.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Todd County

Allen-County Scottsville vs. Warren Central…Here’s two winless squads battling to stay out of the 2nd district’s cellar. Warren Central is explosive on offense with a defense which is offensive. This game will look like two mules fighting over a turnip in a brown paper sack.

KPGFootball’s Weekly Winner… Warren Central (Hey, they have to win one some day, whey not Friday?)

Greenwood vs. Logan County…

Probably would have guessed Logan County would have entered this game undefeated but who would have figured Greenwood would be 4-0 entering the contest? Not us. Well this battle of the unbeatens will prove to be one of the marquee games of the evening.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Greenwood

Hopkinsville High School vs. Christian County…Took a lot of flack for not putting the Tigers in my top-10 when I turned in my votes to the AP this week. I publish my vote, so it isn’t like I don’t draw fire from somewhere every week (Mayfield wasn’t too happy I ranked them behind Todd County Central, come to think of it). I know Hoptown lost at Henderson County to a team I ranked in Class 6A’s top 6. However, let’s not pretend Hoptown competed with the Colonels in Henderson last Friday night. They didn’t, they got smacked. They get a Colonel team they never seem to beat regardless of the records or the talent on the roster. They won’t win this year either.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Christian County (as a faithful alum of Hoptown I would love to be wrong here)

Owensboro vs. Daviess County

Owensboro Sr. High School is 3-1 and one of Kentucky’s premier football teams. Daviess County is 1-3 and one of Kentucky’s biggest disappointments. Friday night it will be Daviess County disappointed as they will have the clock running on them by the early 3rd Q.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Owensboro Sr. High

South Warren vs. Louisville Central… Preseason, I picked the Yellow Jackets to finish 6th in their new classification (4A). The Central faithful roasted me on a spit. How could I possibly say they wouldn’t win it all, after all they did in 3A just last year? It is called graduation, and graduation can turn any team’s fortunes. I believe Central would gladly take finishing 6th right about now as they are 1-3 and about to go 1-4. South Warren may be Kentucky’s best high school football team not located in the city of Louisville.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…South Warren

Murray High vs. Trigg County…Both Trigg County (4-0) and Todd County Central (4-0) have detractors out there who want to discount their both being 4-0 because they haven’t played anybody. These next two weeks will tell us plenty about both. This week Trigg gets a real somebody with plenty of talent in 3-1 Murray High. Next week, Todd gets Owensboro Catholic. In the end, these things work out themselves. Trigg County is a really good football team with plenty of talent of its own.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner...Trigg County

Somerset vs. Williamsburg…Williamsburg is 4-0 and ranked 2nd in this week’s AP poll among the 1A classification. Somerset is the top-ranked 2A football team and deservedly. The Briar-Jumpers are also 3-0 and coming off a bye. Somerset is going to show Williamsburg it has already shown Beechwood, this 2A football is for real in KY.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Somerset

Pinneville vs. Middlesboro…Hiring Larry French away from Southwestern is already paying off for Middlesboro as the team which was 1-10 a year ago is 3-1 right now and threatening to be ranked in the top-10 poll next week with a win over a 4-0 Pinneville squad highly regarded and ranked in 1A. Middlesboro has a visit looming from Breathitt County and that is a district game. Middlesboro can’t afford to look past this Pinneville bunch or they will get bit.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Middlesboro

Trinity vs. Male…This pits the KY’s top ranked team, 4-0 Trinity, against the team that is the second most highly regarded team in Kentucky high school football, Male, 3-0. Someone leaves this game blemished and last year Male beat Trinity twice in the same season. This isn’t last year’s Trinity. Trinity wouldn’t lose three consecutive times to the Dallas Cowboys.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Trinity

Pikeville vs. Belfry…All the available data suggests Pikeville (4-0) should waltz into the CAM and back out of Belfry (2-1) with a victory on Friday night. This is especially true where Belfry’s Isaac Dixon may be dinged-up and might not be available. However, we learned last year BELFRY DOESN’T LOSE FOOTBALL GAMES TO PIKEVILLE!

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Beflry

Letcher County vs. Pike County Central…Pike County Central (2-1) has been one of Kentucky’s big surprises. They are a 5-point loss to Shelby Valley from being undefeated. Letcher County is 2-2 on the year. This game is a virtual pick-em. Flipping a coin, we are taking Pike County Central because the game is in Pike County and because, while both teams lost to Shelby Valley, Letcher got smoked 44-22.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Pike County Central

Ryle vs. Highlands…Ryle is 3-1 and so is Highlands. The difference? Well Highlands’ loss was to Tennessee’s very best high school football program by only 3-points on a neutral field. The Bluebirds are back, baby.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Highlands

Powell vs. Breathitt…Speaking of being back, things are going right well on The Riverbank, where Powell County will be visiting a 4-0 Bobcat team, ranked 2nd in the AP, Class 2A, Top-10 this week. Powell is winless (0-4) and has one hope only; maybe Breathitt will be thinking about the trip to Middlesboro and not be concerned with beating them. Well, unfortunately for Powell County, Breathitt could sleep-walk through this game and still run the clock.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Breathitt

Knox Central vs. Bourbon County…Coach Dave Jones is doing a fine job with the Colonels of Bourbon County (2-2). Knox Central (1-3) has underperformed so far at 1-3 but they have played one Hell of a schedule. Knox County has one of Kentucky’s premier RBs in Ethan Mills. He will run it all over Paris, Kentucky Friday night. Sorry Colonels!

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Knox Central

Meade County vs. Apollo…We were just about to publish an article crowing about how smart we were in our preseason prediction regarding Meade County and then they lost. Oh well, they are still really good this year at 2-1 and our preseason prediction about them being one of 6A’s ten best teams is still the case. Apollo is not really a 6A team, like many first district teams. They are more of a Class 3.75A. They will get the tee-total Hell beat out of them Friday night with some stink on it!

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Meade County

Lexington Catholic vs. Lexington Christian…First of all Catholicism is a denomination within the Christian religion. Now that the “Holy War” aspect is out of the way, both these teams are really elite teams in each of their respective classifications. Catholic has the best QB in KY, Christian has the best collection of sophomores in KY. The QB is a senior.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Catholic

Christian Academy-Louisville vs. Boyle County…CAL just dropped a game to Ballard in overtime this past Friday night. They are really good but not the same team they were a year ago when they won it all at 15-0. If you think Ballard has some athletes on the roster wait until CAL gets a look at Boyle County. Chuck Smith’s staff does the best job coaching a high school football team of any coach in Kentucky. We wonder when was the last time CAL lost two straight games? Well, it’s about to happen either again or for the first time.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…Boyle County

Oldham County vs. South Oldham…We were right impressed with South took CAL to overtime before losing 6-0 in week zero. Now, with CAL on the cusp of losing a second straight, we don’t know quite what to make of it. Oldham County and South are both 3-1 on the year and Oldham is coming off getting blown out, 41-14, by duPont Manual jus this past Friday night. We like South in this game.

KPGFootball’s weekly winner…South Oldham

There are the 20-games we picked this week and why we picked the teams to win we picked. We will continue to pick games of interest throughout the season. Hope you enjoyed the commentary. We are sure roughly half of you will not.
