@james44atkinson (’22) from @DeSalesColtsFB coming on strong at the very right time. @minguabeefjerky @1776Bank @MaxPreps @CalPreps @KyHighFootball

I had a close friend who played at WKU back in the day. WKU is a FBS program now but was an OVC member then and competed in the old NCAA Division I-AA now called FCS.

He told me the Hilltoppers were the only school which manifested much interest in him and they swooped in and signed him late in the process. Didn’t really matter though. He is still roundly considered among the very finest offensive guards to have ever played for WKU.

It’s an important lesson. It doesn’t matter when you are discovered just that you are discovered.

Every year we see players seemingly going unnoticed who catch on at the right college and round into college first-stringers. We believe this will be the case with James Atkinson from St. Francis DeSales.

Atkinson is one of those undersized powder-kegs with incredible leverage and leg-kick who seem to live under a lineman’s hands, right where a DL is hardest to manage. What isn’t undersized is Atkinson’s brain. He’s sporting a 3.5 GPA at one of Louisville’s finest private schools.

Atkinson has been making the rounds on the recruiting trail. He visited Lindsey Wilson a little more than a week ago and also dropped in on Centre College, where he has published being “committed,” the same weekend.

Drawing interest from those two in-state schools is significant. It means he’s running in pretty high cotton among small colleges in the Bluegrass.

Atkinson is coming on strong right now. Lucky for him now is the time it really counts.
