Chadwell skies for this reception

I got to size myself up with the other athletes on the (UK football) team. And truthfully it wasn’t what I expected. I was ready to feel small compared to these guys, but I didn’t. I could see myself playing at that level.

Gavin Chadwell to KSR’s Zack Geoghegan

It is preferable to avoid hyperbole when covering recruiting. After all, these are high school kids playing a high school game.

“This guy is the best this, the best that; this guy is a ‘Mr. Football’ candidate,” these are all just things we say (and write). Some of the flowery descriptions are apt, others are a bunch of bull malarky.

We try to temper it down to a manageable stream of profuse. Sometimes we succeed, other times…well, you know.

We really don’t believe ourselves to be “blowing smoke” today when we say Gavin Chadwell may be the best high school football player in Kentucky’s high school ’24 graduating class. He certainly has the frame.

Chadwell is 6’5″ tall and weighs 235-pounds. Chadwell power cleans 245-pounds and is athletic enough to also play varsity basketball at Knox Central High School. Chadwell averaged 13.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per game on the hardwood.

Football-wise, his production in his 8-games of play in ’21 was equally impressive. At TE, in addition to his role as the offensive line’s sixth member, Chadwell was second on the team in receptions (17-receptions for 295-yards receiving) and first on the team in TD-receptions (8). Chadwell was his team’s second leading offensive scorer.

Defensively, Chadwell played end. Chadwell registered 55-tackles with a TFL, three QB-sacks, and a FR.

For those of you thinking this prospect is reminiscent of Covington Catholic’s former “Mr. Football” Michael Mayer, well this isn’t the first time that has been either said or written. Like Mayer, Chadwell has had Notre Dame come calling.

Mayer has worked out very well for the Irish. Why not see if lightening may strike a second time?

Feels familiar

In addition to being “Mr. Football,” Mayer was a four-star recruit by 247Sports, Rivals, and ESPN.com. Chadwell has already been listed a four-star recruit by On3 Consensus and has a national top 250-ranking. Chadwell is the nation’s No. 10 overall TE according to these same services.

Will Chadwell be awarded the Gatorade Kentucky Football Player of the Year and consensus “Mr. Football” like Mayer was before him (’19)? Don’t know, we will have to wait around until his senior season, Fall of ’24, to know for sure.

We can say he is off to a wonderful start. So, let the plaudits start falling like rain. We thought we might just get this snowball started rolling down this hill today. What the heck, we have nothing better to do!
