’27 prospect struck “Mighty Mayfield” like a bolt of lightning Friday Night

Trigg County is down a couple of QBs with no one left on the active roster who can play it without completely hamstringing the position from which the team borrows the replacement. The Wildcats just can’t seen to achieve any offensive balance without the more polished and well practiced QBs active and healthy. The other night, against a Mayfield team in serious contention for the 2A title, Deon Edison (’27) pulled off a “jump pass” to Connor Bellows (’27) for the night’s only real effective offensive production. Bellows knew just what to do with it once it found him. Look for more of the same this coming week, in Elkton, KY, against the Todd County Central Rebels.

Friday Night Fletch

Cadiz, KY: Coming into the year we warned fans of Trigg County that, while the team had outstanding athletes dotting the first string, injuries would be hard to overcome should they occur. The ‘Cats have suffered quite a few injuries and our preseason prediction couldn’t have been any more on target.

Connor Bellows, The Play

All of that aside, that doesn’t mean we haven’t seem some fine performances from those Wildcats who have managed to stay out of the training tent and on the field. We have indeed.

Davaree Gude (’26) has scored 16-rushing TDs and is closing in on yet another 1,000+ season. Caden Scott (’28) threw for close to a thousand yards and six (6) TDs before separating a shoulder. Deonatae Edison (’27) has 9-TFLs and four (4) QB-sacks on defense and this outstanding, 61-yard TD hook-up with Connor Bellows. Brody Calhoun (’27) has been all over the field for the Wildcats from leading the team in tackles to registering close to six (6) TFLs to recovering fumbles entering the game with Mighty Mayfield.

There is talent on Trigg’s roster. The problem is developing enough talent to withstand injuries and still compete with teams like Mayfield.

The other night, the QB’ing fell to yet another candidate this season (Deon Edison) and the offense was (yet again) spinning its tires in the mud. Trigg was trailing Mayfield 21-0 and the Cardinals looked poised to take away the only offensive dimension the Wildcats still could utilize, the running game.

Then came the play. Entering the game with Mayfield, Bellows main production and success had been on defense. Bellows entered the game with 19-tackles and 2.5 TFLs through the first six (6).

Bellows had played on offense. However, four (4) receptions for 51-yards was the extent of his contributions on that side of the ball.

Trigg hasn’t played a football game since losing to Crittenden County…on September 26

In a throw back to the old “Single Wing” offense; OC, Rusty Goble, and head coach, Chris Ezell, dialed up the old fashioned “jump pass” off the play action fake. It worked like a charm.

Edison leaped up into the air, found a streaking Bellows running a go-route down the right sideline, and hit him in stride with a Mayfield defender riding him like Seattle Slew toward the Derby’s finish line. Bellows was able to throw-off his unwanted passenger and out-race the other Mayfield defenders to pay dirt.

That made the score 21-6. It made the Perdue Field crowd feel like a comeback was possible. It was a big moment. Unfortunately, the moment didn’t last.

As it turns out, Mayfield went on to add to its lead and leave the field on the winning side of a 58-6 margin. Mayfield heads home to play Fort Campbell. The Cardinals will enter the Fort Campbell game the winners of five (5) straight, 7-1 on the year, and ranked towards the top of everyone’s 2A football poll.

Trigg County limps out of the Mayfield game 1-6; but, with life, with hope, and with two winnable games ahead giving the Wildcats the opportunity should they seize it to enter the playoffs on a winning streak. Of course this all hinges on the Wildcats getting it together and finding some offense, going forward, with all the season’s injuries.

The Todd County and Fort Campbell games, while both away from home, are also both chock full of opportunity. That pairing presents the Wildcats a chance to enter the playoffs on a heater as Trigg County will be favored at Todd County and playing a “pick’em” game (at the least) facing Fort Campbell at Fryar Stadium in Oak Grove.

This is a big-time opportunity. This is when big-time players step up their play; big-timers like Connor Bellows.

We can’t make it any simpler than that. We’ll see you at the game!
