’28 Tripp Setliff at Huntington High, could we see him in the KHSAA before all is said and done? @setlifftripp, @Mikesetliff3, @khsaafootball @KyHighFootball, @minguabeefjerky, @bigassfans

Tripp Setliff is a guy we saw quite a bit from on the Future Stars circuit. He played on the KY Future Stars team in seventh and eighth grade. He is a hulking interior guy who has done quite a bit of work on his feet, speed, spacial quicks, and explosion. He is rounding into a top-flight interior OL in the KY/WV area and is at Huntington High presently. Could we see this kid migrate down south to play for a Kentucky High School? Well, you know anything is possible and very similar like moves have been before tried and successfully. Enjoy this feature.

Slow Motion Replay: Roy Walton, part psychologist, part magician, all football coach @minguabeefjerky, @bigassfans, @khsaafootball, @KyHighFootball, @TC_CommodoresFB, @YetteFootball

Roy Walton led a group of young football players who would be known throughout the commonwealth as “Roy’s Boys.” He coached five years at Lafayette and 25 years at Tates Creek. It was at Tates Creek where he would win his two (2) football Kentucky titles, one in 1972 and the other in 1978. Roy Walton was part psychologist, part magician, and all football coach. Enjoy this feature.

Slow Motion Replay: Dale Mueller from Highlands engineered his way to a spectacular record and 11-titles @KyHighFootball, @NKyTribune, @bigassfans, @minguabeefjerky, @khsaafootball

Dale Mueller is an interesting guy. Not all high school football coaches and teachers are mechanical engineering students from the ivy-league. Of course, not all high school football coaches win 12.5 games a season over 20-years, win titles in 55% of the time they coach at a particular school, or play for titles 70% of the time. There is nothing average or normal about Dale Mueller, which is why he is among the greatest high school coaches this commonwealth has ever known. Enjoy this feature, especially you northern Kentuckians who complain we never cover you.

Slow Motion Replay: Sam Harp, from Danville High, representing all which is best about coaching

March 1, 2025 Fletcher Long 4

It is one thing to be the unofficial mayor of “Title Town.” It is quite the other to be a main reason why the town is so christened. Sam Harp is among the greatest to ever grace a sideline. Harp won 75% of his games in Danville, retired 326-106, won seven titles, and posted an unbelievable 82-21 post-season, playoff record. Along the way, he co-Authored a book with me about which no one, associated with football at the KHSAA level, can seem to stop reading. Enjoy this look at the great Sam Harp.

Slow Motion Replay: Remembering Garnis Martin of the Bardstown High School Tigers @minguabeefjerky, @bigassfans, @KyHighFootball, @BardstownFootb1

February 2, 2025 Fletcher Long 1

Phillip Haywood rewrote the Kentucky wins standard for High School coaching. Bardstown’s Garnis Martin was the first coach to 250-wins, then Walter Brugh surpassed the “Martin standard” at Paintsville in 1993. Joe Jaggers surpassed Brugh in 1997 then Schneider took over in 2005 and Dudley Hilton tied Schneider in 2010. The next year Phillip Haywood took over the top post and so on and so forth. Enjoy this ride on the “Way Back” machine.

Preseason scrimmages: What do they mean? What do they tell us? @KyHighFootball @AlPopsFootball

August 16, 2024 Fletcher Long 0

We used to say when I was in the law game that nobody knows all the answers but that a wise man knows where the answers may be found. When I need perspective I have a text group I consult. These guys are either already in the KHSAA Hall of Fame or headed there immediately upon becoming eligible. I got a couple to weigh-in on the relative importance of preseason scrimmages and this is what the two gentlemen had to offer. Friday Night Fletch.

This kid here was easily among the better dual-threats in all of Kentucky’s ’25 graduating class at any level of play in ’23. He accounted for 27-TDs throwing and running. He will head to Toledo to play in college but will first stop off in Columbia, Kentucky to help out Coach Steve Stonebraker’s boys. Enjoy this feature and and don’t forget to #SavorTheFlavor of the country’s very finest beef jerky products. Friday Night Fletch.

There are plenty of things I now know I wish I knew when my elder son was being recruited. Many of the mistakes noted in this article are ones I made myself. I will be much smarter the second time around with my younger son and you can be too if you listen to the advice in this article…FL.
