There are a ton of good football players in Painstville, Johnson County, Kentucky. There are some mighty good wrestlers too. That goes back to the days of the great Jim Matney who was a Hall of Fame coach in both sports, football and wrestling. Rylan Kelsey is an accomplished wrestler who showed he was also a darn fine football player. Not too many freshmen contribute to an 11-win, 4A roster to the extent Kelsey did in 2025. Enjoy this look at a guy who will develop into a multi-phase threat in football and is already a contender at his weight class in wrestling.

Stephan Lovan brings something to the table programs desperately need, particularly programs competing at the 6A classification. Lovan has a big body and a very versatile skill set with a variety of talents which lend itself well to playing in multiple phases of a football game. Lovan was among the offensive and defensive leaders for the former Christian County Colonels this past Fall and is set to lead the newly configured, conglomerate High School. Lovan’s multi-faceted, athletic tool belt and large, sturdy frame makes him more, not less, recruitable to colleges around the commonwealth. Aiden Ellington is coming on the varsity roster and is our Bank of Cadiz featured Wildcat! @khsaafootball, @KyHighFootball, @KatherineL58069

January 26, 2026 Fletcher Long 0

We continue on with our offseason coverage not really discussing players of the week so much as discussing featured players and prospects. Aiden Ellington is a kid with a ton of tough, great size, and who played middle school ball last year and will play varsity this coming Fall. Aiden is only going to improve as he fills out and develops. Ellington is already enjoying success with the powerlifting team on the high school level. Ellington is the kind of kid coaches want to coach and, in the end, that may be the finest compliment which can be paid to him. Enjoy the feature.

We heard a player described by a coach who had offered him as a “Football Playing Jesse.” We looked that term up and, what do you know, it really is a thing. A “Football Playing Jesse” is a guy who may not be the right frame, may be a tad small, or a tad slow, or whatever but is just a guy who “does it” when he gets o the field between the lines and under the lights. Today we feature a kid who is as Football Playing of a Jesse as any kid in the KHSAA. Enjoy this look at one of the best football players the commonwealth of Kentucky has competition at any level of competition.

West Jessamine has a ‘Bird-Dawg’ in its lineup… @Aspirationsgym, @NashBird24, @WJCOLTSFootball, @bigassfans, @eCampusdotcom, @khsaafootball, @KyHighFootball

The Everly brothers told us “Johnny [was] a Joker (He’s a bird)/ A very funny joker (He’s a bird)… What they would have told us, were they still with us, is that Johnny isn’t the only Bird. Nash Bird is a “Bird” and a very smooth and not so funny weapon for whom to have to game plan if you are playing Coach Scott Marsh’s football team. Bird had a huge junior year and was a player who should have been on our Large School All-State Football Team. What can we tell you? We missed. We have our eyes on him now and if he continues to play his senior season the way he played in ’25, I wouldn’t count on us missing him a second time. Enjoy this feature.

I once heard having an accomplished place kicker in the fold likened to finding a $20.00 bill in your dry cleaning. You may not know you even need $20.00 but it comes in handy when you are both hungry and thirsty and you find what you need just sitting in your pocket. Jayleigh Campbell is not just an accomplished placekicker who converted just over 81% of her PATs (9 for 11) but she is a a junior who should compete for the job at the newly consolidated high school. It must be something to realize your kicking game is so competently handled and looks to remain so for the foreseeable future. Congratulations to Jayleigh Campbell for being our ‘Wake Up and Smell the Coffee (or Tea)’ Player of the Week from Lasaters Coffee & Tea where you are more than served, you are loved!

Kenyon Cunningham, from Murray High, is our Bank of Cadiz featured player @KenyonCunn61547, @MurrayTigers, @MLT_Sports, @khsaafootball, @KyHighFootball, @bigassfans, @eCampusdotcom

January 19, 2026 Fletcher Long 0

We continue on with our offseason coverage not really discussing players of the week so much as discussing featured players and prospects. Kenyon Cunningham is a kid with a ton athletic ability and potential who was put in a very tough spot for any freshman both in the semi-state and then in the championship game. He will be called on to be “The Man” going forward as senior Wyatt Robbins has exhausted his eligibility and is headed to play football for the Murray State Racers. Cunningham is a ranked basketball prospect in the commonwealth among ’29s and is already enjoying success as a varsity basketball player on a 12-2 ball club. Cunningham is the kind of kid coaches want to coach and, in the end, that may be the finest compliment which can be paid to him. Enjoy the feature.

Kylan Combs from Breathitt has taken the long way home @combs_kory, @Elithomas1219, @BreathittFb, @khsaafootball, @KyHighFootball, @bigassfans, @eCampusdotcom

Among my favorite groups in the seventies was the group “Supertramp.” They had a wonderful song entitled, “Take the Long Way Home” released in 1979. Kylan Combs knows all about taking the long way to anywhere. Combs’s home is on a football field, positioned at safety, or anywhere on a gridiron actually. You see, Kylan Combs is a “Combs.” In the Appalachias, you don’t have to say any more. We fully understand the level of citizenship that surname requires and signifies and the football playing effort and talent associated with that particular family throughout the region. Kylan Combs has taken the long way home to stardom in Breathitt’s defensive third level once again and has made another of our Small School All-State Football Teams (Big Ass Fans) and we are mighty glad to welcome him home. Enjoy the article.
