10 Toss-Ups and 10 Blow-outs

As sort of a change-up on Weekly winners, we are going to pick the team we believe will win from amongst 10 match-ups which could go either way. Then, we will pick 10 games which won’t even be close. Last week, following this formula, we were 7-3 in the games which we believed to be toss-ups and we were 10-0 on the blowouts (of course). We must say though that Owensboro Apollo, who we thought Henderson County would completely blow out, made a real game of it and almost sank us. Nice job Eagles. Here we go…

The Toss-ups…

Before South Warren lost its QB, and had this been getting picked pre-season, it would have been on the Blow-out list. However, Greenwood is way better than anyone thought they would be and South Warren faces, in Greenwood, its second “test” playing without its first-string signal caller since losing to Bowling Green 14-3 for its only loss of the year. Still like South Warren.

McCracken has emerged as a force with whom to reckon in Kentucky’s Class 6A. The Choctaws are one of Tennessee’s better Class 5A football teams. Don’t like the fact McCracken is so reliant on its offense to win games and have allowed a ton of points this year.

When these two play, you can literally throw out the record books. Sure Highlands is 5-3 but they have played Kentucky’s hardest schedule too. This game will be close and we are going out on a limb here but Covington Catholic has to lose sometime. We could see the Bluebirds pulling off this one.

Just couldn’t imagine a match-up being more of a toss-up than these two. We will take the Scotties here, because they are at home and odds-makers seem to think that has value.

Caldwell County’s coaching staff may be the best around western Kentucky. They have assistants whom have been together decades. Very low turn-over which has led to a staff which has worked together a long time and won a lot of football games regardless of what talent they either have or don’t have in Princeton, Kentucky. Murray is at home here and these teams are virtually identical regarding how good each of them is. Both teams are elite teams in Kentucky’s 2A classification.

We said preseason Fulton County would be among the class of the 1A classification on the western end of Kentucky. They have proven us right and we appreciate it. However, Crittenden County is ALWAYS among the best 1A teams playing on the western end of Kentucky. This is a huge game for both teams and Crittenden County has more experience winning huge games.

I suppose we shall learn how much the RPI means this week. Lloyd Memorial has the highest RPI amongst Eastern Kentucky Class 2A football teams (even higher than Breathitt County’s). Beachwood can ill-afford to lose this game. On paper, one would think Lloyd Memorial would win this one at home. Is it really possible Beachwood could lose 5 times in one season? I suppose anything is possible.

Not all 5-3 records are created equally. Newport Central Catholic will show you exactly what we mean by that this week.

The mighty Blue Tornado of Paducah Tilghman are one of the teams who are historically elite in Kentucky high school football. There are certain teams which almost need to be good for Kentucky football to thrive on the high school level. Paducah Tilghman is one of those programs. Sure, they aren’t as good as some of the squads the older of us remember but they are still pretty dad-burn good.

Guess when is the last time a Todd County Central squad won 7 games in a regular season? I am told it has been between 40 to 50 years. Wow, has Darrell Keith ever been a God-send for that program. What a fantastic football coach. Now, Todd’s record is considerably better than McLean’s but McLean, after an 0-3 beginning has hit its stride of late. They have owned Todd County in this series. If Todd County didn’t have so many starters on the IR (injured reserve), it would be easier to pick them. I don’t think McLean could play with the Todd-squad which began the season. However, injuries are part of the game and Todd has suffered quite a few. It may hinge on whether Ja’Twan Graham can or can’t go and what Bryce Nolan’s status is. We think they both play against McLean.

Other winners not specifically covered: Hazard over Pikeville; Lexington Christian over Somerset; Owensboro over Graves County; Trigg County over Webster; Franklin-Simpson over Warren Central; Leslie County over Morgan; Walton-Verona over Shawnee; Male over Fern Creek; Shelby Valley over East Ridge; Warren East over ACS; Bell County over Jackson; South Oldham over Seneca; Boyle County over Anderson; Lexington Catholic over Bourbon Co.; Franklin County over Waggener; duPont Manual over PRP; St. Xavier over Butler (Louisville); and Johnson Central over Harlan County.

The blow-outs…

So Ballard County’s head football coach, who should be fired immediately with the job he is doing, took exception to my indicating Murray would beat him last week as badly as Murray wanted to beat his Bombers. He said something about me trying to sell my son to him. I have never met the man, have never talked to the man, and my youngest son is 36-years old. By the way, if you are into buying sons, how much would you give me for him? I suppose, if the price is right, anything is for sale. Now that is out of the way, Coach Brooks and his Bombers are lucky the KHSAA’s formula for RPI doesn’t have a margin of victory component or Mayfield might just beat them 100-0. As it is, he can expect another 55-6ish shellacking like he has gotten every week this year outside of his lone win against Fulton City.

If the Storm stays within 30-points of the Cougars, I am officially checking the temperature in Hell.

Christian County is absolutely terrible offensively and it ends up effecting defensive performance too. They have been run off the football field in many of their games and then made surprisingly good showings a few times against teams the ilk of Caldwell County and Madisonville North-Hopkins. What would scare me if I were Bowling Green Senior High is the fact Christian County routinely produces some of the finest athletes to play sports on the western end of the commonwealth. You just never know when athletes may strike like lightening and beat you on a given night. That night won’t be this Friday night because the Purples will pound the Colonels into a fine, powdery dust.

There are teams in Class 4A with which the Lakers wouldn’t be a bad match-up. Unfortunately for them, Central is the only team in District 1 (which also has Madisonville North-Hopkins, Logan County, and Hoptown) about which that can be said. They will get completely pounded.

Owensboro Catholic doesn’t lose to Class 2A, 2nd district football teams. Unfortunately for Hancock County, Catholic has one of the best QBs in Kentucky and the Hornets are a 2nd district team, so you know what that means…

Maybe if the clock runs from the opening kick-off and Frederick Douglass plays its JV, Great Crossing can keep it within 50.

Breathitt has to agree to play by “special rules,” like running the clock from the opening kick (which they have done twice in seven games), to keep from blowing-out opponents. The Bobcat-Machine pulls visits the Patriots in Knott County, Kentucky Friday night. There won’t be much left when they pull back out.

Pike County Central has been a surprise team in the Kentucky Class 3A this year. They are really good and are on a collision course to play Breathitt County on the Riverbank to end the regular season. With Belfry away and Breathitt away after the Magoffin game, the Hawks can’t afford a slip-up here. Good thing the Hornets are terrible.

One of these teams is an elite team in the Kentucky 1A classification with its only two losses coming to Pikeville and Hazard. The other high school is named for a woman and plays football commensurate with its name.

If the Holy Cross playing in this game was the one in Louisville, this game would still be listed. However, in that event the team we were picking to blow-out the other would be in reverse order. As it is, Newport has drawn the team from Covington. They are lucky.
