It is time to break down the 2A classification and eCampus.com is as interested in this class as any other business entity in the commonwealth of KY. We picked LCA a year ago and people thought we were crazy. The Eagles return a ton of production and, all of a sudden, our prognosis doesn’t appear so far fetched. Beechwood welcomes back an all-time coaching legend to its sideline and also returns a strong Mr. Football candidate in Tyler Fryman. Owensboro Catholic, Belfry, and Breathitt all have stars, are very well coached, and figure to make a run. Enjoy this look at the 2A classification as we gear up toward the opener.

We generally go back and republish some articles during the Dead Period. This is the last day of Dead Period and it is full throttle to the opener from here until opening weekend. We are excited about what has been a thrilling offseason. We have accomplished quite a lot this offseason not the least of which has been our publishing the most decorated and distributed book on the topic of Kentucky High School football in Kentucky history. We are very gratified about the book, “Kentucky’s All-Time, High School Football Coaches & A Few More I Liked,” as it has spent a considerable amount of time on the “Amazon” International “Best Sellers’s List” in the categories of “Football,” “Football Coaching,” and “Football Biographies.” Enjoy this flashback to one of our favorite former players. We are in the Dead Period and decided to look back on a kid we publicized and helped win “Mr. Football” back in the day. This article was written back in 2018, after he attended our Mountain All-State combine and had come off a freshman season where he made our Freshman All-State Football Team. We were on this cat early. He turned into everything we could have ever hoped he would be and won Mr. Football his senior year after leading Coach Haywood, and his Belfry team, to. Haywood’s eighth (8th) KHSAA title. Enjoy this look back at one of our all-time favorite players who starred at one of our favorite programs for one of our all-time favorite coaches. No one saw the importance of what we provide and believed in our product more than Coach Haywood. God do we miss him!

Last year, as a junior, JB Woolum helped lead Belfry to a 12-2 worksheet and a narrow, on the road, loss (5-points, 34-29) to the classification’s title winner (Lexington Christian Academy “LCA”). Woolum registered 82-rushes, 1,066-yards (13-yards a carry), 20-TDs, with 24-receptions, 520-yards, and 6-TDs receiving on offense while scoring 164-points (20-TDs rushing, 6-receiving, a KO return, and a two (2) pointer). On defense, Woolum registered 50-tackles, 1-TFL, and four (4) INTs for 70-IRNYs. On special teams, he returned punts and kicks, housing a KR. Another year like that and we have another “Mr. Football” plaque to place on the field house wall next to Isaac Dixon’s. Is JP Woolum a “Mr. Football” candidate? He is in our book!

Alex “AJ” Johnson is a dual-threat stud at QB who might end up a RB in college or even a strong safety/linebacker depending on how his frame continues its development. Johnson has added 15-pounds of muscle this offseason and has his bench press up over 250 (255) and both his squat and deadlift at the four plate (405-lbs.) level. This kid has quite the season a year ago in leading the Blackcats to a 12-1 finish and a loss in the regional championship game in Fort Mitchell, KY to Beechwood. No shame there. P-burg doesn’t get enough coverage owing to being a small enrollment high school in an isolated and remote part of the commonwealth of Kentucky. We tried to tell everyone Prestonsburg was back last year when the team posted 11-wins against 2-losses. Everyone got too caught up in P-burg’s late season loss to Breathitt, a Breathitt squad with a very young offensive backfield which had grown up quite a bit by the 1st of November. Anyway, Prestonsburg just beat the best team on its schedule in overcoming Hazard in Prestonsburg this pas Saturday. High school football will always be the land of the 6’0″ pulling guard. Programs have been built on the backs of exceptional football players at the high school level who found themselves an inch too short, 15 pounds too light, or a fraction of a second slower than the position requires. Notwithstanding these inadequacies, these guys tend to find a way to make it happen regardless. This guy today is such a guy. Now the may bloom late and grow into a larger, more suitable for D-1 type frame. For now, he is an exceptionally talented, hard nosed, football player on one of Kentucky’s premier teams vying for a championship. Enjoy the feature.

Jim Matney was simply among the best high school football and wrestling coaches the Appalachias has ever produced. I had the privilege of getting to interact with him on several occasions as a newspaper editor of a 135 or more year old newspaper in Jackson, KY. Matney always made me feel like I was a big shot. Of course, I was sort of a big shot because I was hanging around him. Enjoy this look at an all-timer in the estimation of just about everyone.

Sometimes the featured photo with our articles is a bit fuzzy. We will never sacrifice the image which best captures our story for “a clear picture.” We are a magazine which focuses on “the written word.” We’re story-tellers, not photographers. We just use any old photograph. There isn’t a darn thing fuzzy about Mike Holcomb and his ability to coach a high school football team. This guy is a coaching genius who was running Mumme-like offense in the Appalachias, where power run schemes go to die, before Hal Mumme ever got to UK. This guy’s inside zone play, out of the spread, hits the line as fast as a fullback belly dive. Enjoy this feature.
