Very quietly, almost without notice, Coby Lewis, in his first season at the helm of the Lakers, is turning in a whale of a season and turning a lot of heads around the commonwealth in coaching circles. He has “The Lakers” out to a 4-1 start, the best start it started the 2016 season with a 6-1 record and one of Western Kentucky’s great defensive units. This week’s Player of the Week, Logan Smith, enjoyed just a spectacular game, but then again, he has been doing things like this his entire Laker career. Like we have done in prior seasons, now the games are finally here, we will take the last week’s action and break it down and then look at the road ahead. We had a slight misstep at home with North Hopkins this past Friday night and the trip to Fryar Stadium to play Fort Campbell means the sledding will not get much easier. Fort Campbell has made some personnel reassignments which should make the team harder than the one the staff has seen on film. Enjoy this feature and get out to the games this weekend. Wells played in a single game in ’24. However, the 6’3,” 330-pounder in the 2027 graduating class proved the old Stanislavski adage about there being no small parts, just small actors is true even in football. Wells is coming off a third place finish at the Kentucky Powerlifting Meet in the Super Heavyweight Division and the young OL/NG is expected to play both ways this season in addition to his defensive role. This is a guy readying for a prominent role in ’25, a leading role, and he has put in the type offseason a young player should looking for that type of varsity PT. Enjoy the feature.

Jack Long is a kid we weren’t sure would get cleared to play the coming season. As it turns out, he got cleared by provided he wears a helmet specifically designed to avoid head trauma, limit his contact through the week, and be permitted to wear a concussion cap during KHSAA games. As it turns out, Jack’s rejoining the team was important for reasons other than football. One of Jack’s coaches suffered a medical incident related to his exertion in the heat and other medical issues he was suffering at the time and Jack, mid-scrimmaging, was observant enough to notice it and call attention to it. The early detection may have made all the difference in the world.

Brody Calhoun is an example of a star HS player who is very likely to play in college but at what competitive level we aren’t in a position to accurately forecast. You see, there is a possibility Calhoun isn’t done growing so to know at what college level he may play we would have to speculate how his frame finishes. We just aren’t in a position to know. Calhoun’s on field production is “off the charts” as the rising junior has made close to 160-career tackles and hasn’t taken his first 11th-grade class yet. We are approaching “Dead Period” so get ready. Not much lies on the other side of “Dead Period” apart from two preseason scrimmages and opening night. We’re ready. We hope you are.
