Joseph Katz brings something to the table programs desperately need, particularly programs competing at the 2A classification. Katz has a very versatile skill set with a variety of talents which lend itself well to playing multiple sports. Katz averaged over 6-points and 4-rebounds a game as an eighth grader playing varsity basketball at Fort Campbell High this winter. Basketball employs skills which lend naturally (and specifically) to playing football. Katz’s multi-faceted, athletic tool belt makes him more, not less, recruitable to colleges around the commonwealth. Enjoy this feature.

The Kelley family has a very long history in the local football industry and several of the Kelleys have had their numbers retired owing to their familial history of playing excellence. Football has been very good to their family and they look for ways to give back to this very special community. I, for one, miss the old time football coaches like Walter Brugh from Paintsville. Often the “greats” from these days end up among the all-timers. This guy here fits that bill. Brugh went to the title game twice, in 1978 and in 1985. Each trip netted him a tight ball game which pitted him against two other Hall of Famers, Marshall Patterson in 1978 and Pat Gates in 1985. We have before mused around the magazine how often two hall of fame guys find themselves pitted against the other at that level. It is uncanny. Enjoy this look at a coach who retired in 1994 the KHSAA’s all time leader in wins. He has since been eclipsed but remains pretty high on the all-time wins list. The “Big Blue Legend” himself, Walter Brugh. Try to learn a thing or two.

We have been featuring some of the greatest football coaches to ever grace a sideline in our Slow Motion Replay series. We have an entire panel of “experts” who guide and direct our selections. Not everyone appearing on this or that “All-Time” list is amongst the greatest in the coaching department as there is more to coaching than raw wins-losses. This guy here, Monty Joe Lovell, had an incredible run as both an athlete and coach in the Richmond, Kentucky area at the old Madison Model High School. He was yearly in contention for state supremacy for his 11-years and took his team to the 1A title game in 1979 dropping a heart breaker to Bellevue, 7-0. Lovell would lose playoff games to the likes of Poppa Joe Jaggers and Marshall Patterson, two all-time Hall of Famers both of whom struggled to beat Lovell and both of whom (Jaggers in ’72 and Patterson in ’78) went on to win it all. Enjoy this look at a truly remarkable former football coach.

I grew up very familiar with Marshall Patterson. I was reared around the haunts of western Kentucky. Everyone around these parts knew who Marshall Patterson was. Patterson built the Fort Campbell High football program into a dynasty. His players were known for discipline, grit, determination, and toughness. If you were playing a Patterson coached ball club, you had better come ready for a physical, up-hill battle. This guy was the embodiment of coaches of his time, the championship winning ones anyway. Enjoy this look back at one of the true Kentucky greats.
