Jack Long was medically retired from the active roster in 2025. That doesn’t diminish from a young man who was a heck of a football player over the course of his varsity high school career. Whatever Long’s roll may be going forward, Long will find someway to contribute and his contribution will be meaningful and impactful. That is why he is our Bank of Cadiz, Feature of the Week! Among my favorite groups in the seventies was the group “Supertramp.” They had a wonderful song entitled, “Take the Long Way Home” released in 1979. Kylan Combs knows all about taking the long way to anywhere. Combs’s home is on a football field, positioned at safety, or anywhere on a gridiron actually. You see, Kylan Combs is a “Combs.” In the Appalachias, you don’t have to say any more. We fully understand the level of citizenship that surname requires and signifies and the football playing effort and talent associated with that particular family throughout the region. Kylan Combs has taken the long way home to stardom in Breathitt’s defensive third level once again and has made another of our Small School All-State Football Teams (Big Ass Fans) and we are mighty glad to welcome him home. We are very pleased to welcome Lasaters Coffee & Tea to our growing family of advertisers. The Kelley family has a very long history in the local football industry and several of the Kelleys have had their numbers retired owing to their familial history of playing excellence. Jack Long is a kid we weren’t sure would get cleared to play the coming season. As it turns out, he got cleared by provided he wears a helmet specifically designed to avoid head trauma, limit his contact through the week, and be permitted to wear a concussion cap during KHSAA games. As it turns out, Jack’s rejoining the team was important for reasons other than football. One of Jack’s coaches suffered a medical incident related to his exertion in the heat and other medical issues he was suffering at the time and Jack, mid-scrimmaging, was observant enough to notice it and call attention to it. The early detection may have made all the difference in the world.

Brody Calhoun is an example of a star HS player who is very likely to play in college but at what competitive level we aren’t in a position to accurately forecast. You see, there is a possibility Calhoun isn’t done growing so to know at what college level he may play we would have to speculate how his frame finishes. We just aren’t in a position to know. Calhoun’s on field production is “off the charts” as the rising junior has made close to 160-career tackles and hasn’t taken his first 11th-grade class yet. We are approaching “Dead Period” so get ready. Not much lies on the other side of “Dead Period” apart from two preseason scrimmages and opening night. We’re ready. We hope you are. De’André Watkins is a guy coming off his sophomore season which saw him get plenty of PT for a young guy laboring on a 6A roster. We believe the Colonels will be way more formidable in ’24 then they were at any time in ’23.
