Slow Motion Replay: (Article No. 3,000) Lynn Ray, paved the way for success today! @CovCathFootball, @EddieEviston, @CovCathColonels, @bigassfans, @minguabeefjerky, @khsaafootball, @KyHighFootball

You will notice we pictured Lynn Ray with his wife of many years as the “featured photograph” to this piece. There is a reason for that. Football wives suffer everything their husband’s endure and they do it without the least bit of fanfare nor credit. Well, we should say “outside credit.” Coaches know how valuable and faithful and supportive wife is to a lifetime of coaching and how quickly a poor choice, in the wife department, can derail a career. Today we detail the career of a guy who was a fine player for Roy Kidd at EKU and constructed the machine we now know as Covington Catholic. Lynn Ray was 5-0 in title games and won approximately 64% of his games at a place which had no practice field, no football stadium, and 34 wins in its 8 year history prior to Ray’s retention. Enjoy the feature.

I think the world of Dan Goble. I am also mindful of the responsibility of this online magazine to be the recorders of KHSAA football history. I don’t know why the job has fallen to us, I just know that it has. That is why when I got a call from Coach Goble asking me to feature a former coach who meant the world to him, I was eager to comply with the request. From that phone call, this article materialized. I would like to thank my mother, and the DAR, for contributing to this piece. We have resurrected the story of a former great we were required to rescue from the dustbin of history, soon to be forgotten forever. Thank Goodness we got to it before it was gone. Enjoy this article.

Slow Motion Replay: Bob Redman, Renaissance Man @ItsChris_Redman, @OwensboroSports, @bigassfans, @minguabeefjerky, @khsaafootball, @KyHighFootball, @MaleBulldogs

Bob Redman was a true Renaissance Man in that he was able to do a variety of things while doing them all very well. Redman was among the greatest high school football coaches the Louisville area has ever known and managed to beat both St. Xavier and Trinity more than any other Louisville area coach in spite of coaching a team in one of those powerhouses’s districts in 30 of his 35-years. Redman averaged over 9-wins a season for 35-seasons. Playing against the best and most talented rosters the commonwealth of Kentucky had to offer, that is really something quite remarkable. Slow Motion Replay: Tom Becherer, from the ‘thin thirty’ to the Rockets’ ’87 launch @SCHSRockets, @RocketPrincipal, @SCPS_Activities, @centurions_fb, @khsaafootball, @KyHighFootball, @minguabeefjerky, @bigassfans

We were praising the 1971 season at Shelbyville High, the one where Dan Goble led the “Rockets” to an all-time season, when a reader reminded us Shelby County had other “all-time” seasons under coach Tom Becherer. Becherer won over 225-games, led the “Rockets” to a “Big-Boy” title (4A), and led them to the finals on three other occasions. Becherer helped get the Christian Academy-Louisville started on its path to Kentucky HS powerhouse status; but, what he did in Shelbyville, Kentucky is singular, remarkable, and why he is considered among the very best and more elite coaches at the HS level in commonwealth history. Enjoy this look at the former UK football great.

Dan Goble deserved to be inducted into the KHSAA Hall of Fame for what his teams did on the football field. We helped spearhead this push for his induction and successfully. It is one of the noblest callings for which we have ever been summoned. We were honored to be invested in the search for justice and propriety.

Preseason scrimmages: What do they mean? What do they tell us? @KyHighFootball @AlPopsFootball

August 16, 2024 Fletcher Long 0

We used to say when I was in the law game that nobody knows all the answers but that a wise man knows where the answers may be found. When I need perspective I have a text group I consult. These guys are either already in the KHSAA Hall of Fame or headed there immediately upon becoming eligible. I got a couple to weigh-in on the relative importance of preseason scrimmages and this is what the two gentlemen had to offer. Friday Night Fletch.

DeAndre Watkins helping to change the culture back to the Colonels of yesteryear @CoachAtchley @AlPopsFootball @ColonelFootball @ReallyTristin @minguabeefjerky @1776Bank

De’André Watkins is a guy coming off his sophomore season which saw him get plenty of PT for a young guy laboring on a 6A roster. We believe the Colonels will be way more formidable in ’24 then they were at any time in ’23. Matter of fact, one doesn’t have to be too old to remember a time the Colonels were a holy terror upon the western-KY landscape. Enjoy the feature. Friday Night Fletch.

Breaking News Story: CCHS brings back Greg Abren; Atchley continues commitment to adding former Colonels to staff @ColonelFootball @CoachAtchley @ThinLizzy_ @840WHAS @1776Bank @minguabeefjerky @Christian_Co270

March 12, 2024 Fletcher Long 0

Coach Atchley continues to add to his staff at Christian County as the two area high schools march toward consolidation. The new Colonel head man appears bent on bring back on staff coaches from the not too distant past who remember what a championship caliber program resembles. Getting back Greg Abren goes a way towards bring back the program’s swag. Friday Night Fletch.

New CCHS Coach, Ethan Atchley, will NOT find the cupboard barren, not while there are some [Jimmarion] Byrd[s] flying around @CoachAtchley @ColonelFootball @1776Bank @minguabeefjerky @840WHAS

February 17, 2024 Fletcher Long 1

We attended the Atchley presser. He is an impressive guy and will turn that program around lickety-split. He has some material left over around whom to build. One of those “Dude” is a “Byrd.” Jimmarion Byrd is a ’26 guy who has plus size, plus athleticism, and plus hostility and feel for the game. Jimmarion plays angrily, like anyone would want from a LB/Edge guy. Enjoy the feature and get ready for the Atchley Show. Friday Night Fletch.
