Among my favorite groups in the seventies was the group “Supertramp.” They had a wonderful song entitled, “Take the Long Way Home” released in 1979. Kylan Combs knows all about taking the long way to anywhere. Combs’s home is on a football field, positioned at safety, or anywhere on a gridiron actually. You see, Kylan Combs is a “Combs.” In the Appalachias, you don’t have to say any more. We fully understand the level of citizenship that surname requires and signifies and the football playing effort and talent associated with that particular family throughout the region. Kylan Combs has taken the long way home to stardom in Breathitt’s defensive third level once again and has made another of our Small School All-State Football Teams (Big Ass Fans) and we are mighty glad to welcome him home. Justin Haddix is a mountain legend. Much like Jay Cobb at Trinity, people from outside the mountains tend to forget from where Justin Haddix comes. The important thing is the former WKU QB-ing great hasn’t forgotten. As the Appalachians would be proud to claim, “Justin is one of ours.” Haddix has had a Hall of Fame run both as a player and coach. He still talks with the great Mike Holcomb regularly and the two of them run a QB camp together which convened on Joe MacDaniel field at Andy Frye stadium a year ago. Enjoy this look at a guy who, like Mark Spader, is a future Hall of Famer.

Partly it is because we can’t come up with a more perfect description than that and we are aware Johnny Manziel was similarly christened. Jon Collins has come to symbolize all which is fantastic about the KHSAA and its member institutions and coaches, be they head coaches or assistants. Once might say that he is an institution. We like the Aces to get back to Lexington this coming season and believe they will escape with the crown. We also believe programs like Beechwood, LCA, and Mayfield will have a bunch to say about it. Ethan Bowling has been a “high energy guy” since coming out of the middle school ranks one of the better thought of prospects in the region at that level of play. He hasn’t disappointed in high school. Bowling is a two-way star along the Breathitt fronts and plays with the zeal which has transformed him into a fan favorite. Enjoy this feature. Waylon Abner is a member of one of the best units playing Kentucky football at the HS level, the “Big Blue Wave.” The “Big Blue Wave” is the OL for the Breathitt Bobcats. Sawyer Hall gets the majority of press but perhaps some of us might want to watch Waylon Abner. Abner is a ferocious pulling guard who may be the best at that discipline than any other guard or interior guy in the KHSAA. Enjoy the feature. Friday Night Fletch.
