Malachi Wheeler reports running a 4.5-second 40-yard dash. High School RB/ATHs who move like that and are 6’0″ and weigh 185-pounds are hard to keep off the field.

Sometimes we look at the previous season’s statistics and think, “Something has to be wrong here.” We thought that when looking at Malachi Wheeler’s reported production from a season ago.

First of all, Wheeler is a ’23 prospect meaning he was a junior in ’21. Juniors his size, who run like he reports, find the field somewhere at 6th-District, 4A programs who finish 3-7 and miss the playoffs.

Yet when looking at his statistics, or the stats reported for him by the school’s athletic director, it says he played in only one varsity game and carried the ball one time. Maybe he was injured a year ago, that is not something we would be able to just know without an agent in that particular area.

Regardless, Fall ’22 is the dawning of a new season. Wheeler is entering his last journey through the high school football landscape. He has the physical tools to have a very productive season and “breakout” onto the gridiron landscape.

Wheeler is listed as a RB/ATH. Like we have before mentioned, his 4.5-second, 40-yard dash running speed would fit the bill. His 3.8 GPA puts him in discussion at many Kentucky college programs who would be willing to take a chance on a kid with his dimensions who moves like him.

We are optimistic Wheeler will find the field this coming Fall. We are equally optimistic that, upon his finding the lineup consistently, he will put up some numbers making him an attractive “take” for a team around the commonwealth.

It is time for Wheeler to put his best foot forward. He’s ready. So are we.

  1. By watching Wheeler’s highlights video, it appears he played previously at Coal Grove high school in Coal Grove, Ohio. Which is across the Ohio river from Ashland, KY. Coal Grove high school is also Boyd County head football coach Evan Ferguson’s alma mater.
