How the top-10 fared this past weekend, September 27, 2019 (Featured Photograph: James Fugate, Jackson Times-Voice)

This is sent to us directly from the Associated Press. We have started sharing this with our readers and subscribers. The below is how last week’s top 10 did this immediately past weekend.

How Ranked Teams Fared…

Class 6A

1. Lou. Male (5-0) beat Lou. Butler 61-22.

Male shows it is the beat team in the classification. Butler shows it really isn’t among the top-10.

2. Lou. Trinity (5-1) beat Lou. St. Xavier 35-3.

Trinity gets back on the train toward a potential title. Saint Xavier leaves us wondering whether they are as good as they have been in the past.

3. North Hardin (6-0) beat Bullitt East 42-6.

North Hardin is really, and we mean really good. As good of talent in its lineup as any team in the classification.

4. Lou. St. Xavier (4-2) lost to Lou. Trinity 35-3.

5. Central Hardin (6-0) beat Bullitt East 42-6.

Central Hardin upholds the Hardin County tradition of being really good at playing football.

6. Lou. DuPont Manual (4-1) beat North Bullitt 42-3.

7. Simon Kenton (3-3) lost to Johnson Central 49-11.

8. Henderson Co. (4-1) idle.

9. McCracken County (4-2) beat Apollo 81-51.

They should have called this one the all-Defense Bowl. How does one allow a team to score 51 points on them and still win the game? I guess by scoring 81 points. Apollo is the worst defense in 5A, they have allowed 305 points in 6 games. WOW! If Apollo has beaten you this year (they are 2-4), be very worried about your program.

10. Lou. Butler (3-3) lost to Lou. Male 61-22.

Butler talks a lot of smack about being an elite 6A program for a team which surrenders 61 points to anyone not in either the NFC or AFC conferences.

Class 5A

1. Cov. Catholic (6-0) beat Cooper 45-6.

Yawn!

2. Frederick Douglass (6-0) beat Scott Co. 36-0.

How good would Douglass be if Dekel Crowdus hadn’t bolted to IMG just right before the season?

3. Scott Co. (5-1) lost to Frederick Douglass 36-0.

It is clear we had Scott County quite a bit overrated.

4. South Warren (6-0) beat Glasgow 21-20.

South Warren really had to work to keep the commonwealth longest active win streak in tack at 21 games. They have Bowling Green next and BG needs to beat them badly. Coach Spader needs to beat SW badly.

5. Highlands (4-2) lost to Boyle Co. 30-0.

We don’t believe there is a team in Kentucky which can beat Boyle County. Not Trinity, Not Male, Not anyone! We’re serious.

6. Owensboro (5-1) beat Ohio Co. 41-0.

The Red Devils are rounding into shape and are due to get some huge additions back for the stretch run from off the IR (Austin Gough). Look out 5A!

7. Bowling Green (3-2) vs. Corbin, ppd.

I hear this game will NOT be rescheduled.

8. Pulaski Co. (5-1) beat Whitley Co. 21-18.

9. South Oldham (5-1) beat Jeffersontown 56-13.

South Oldham continues to roll and Bednarczyk and Martin continue to lead the band.

10. Grayson Co. (6-0) beat Muhlenberg Co. 22-14.

Here’s one of these but they haven’t played anybody squads. Grayson, don’t listen to that crap, just keep beating whomever is on the schedule.

Class 4A

1. Boyle Co. (6-0) beat Highlands 30-0.

2. Johnson Central (5-0) beat Simon Kenton 49-11.

Johnson Central is big, physical, “down-hillers.” They are on a collision course with Boyle County at some point.

3. Madisonville-North Hopkins (5-1) lost to Logon Co. 26-24.

How many times in his illustrious high school career is Tyler Ezell going to beat at team on the game’s last play? This is the second time he has done it to the Maroons, did it to them in 2017 too. Hoptown’s next.

4. Franklin Co. (6-0) beat Shelby Co. 27-7.

Franklin County is too lightly regarded. They are really good.

5. Lex. Catholic (4-2) beat Lex. Tates Creek 54-50.

For Catholic to really be among the elite in the Class, they have got to be better on defense. They have surrendered 186 points in 6 games. They aren’t as bad as Apollo on that side of the ball but allowing over 30 a game?

6. Logan Co. (6-0) beat Madisonville-North Hopkins 26-24.

See above.

7. Hopkinsville (4-2) beat Calloway Co. 43-0.

So Hopkinsville beat Calloway County and badly. That certainly opens an entire can of “Whoopity-Doo!” Impress us, whip Logan County.

8. Corbin (2-2) vs. Bowling Green, ppd.

We don’t really know too much about Corbin other than having Justin Haddix as a team’s coach is worth several top-10 votes.

9. Wayne Co. (4-1) idle.

10. Harlan Co. (5-1) beat Clay Co. 21-7.

Class 3A

1. Bell Co. (5-0) beat McCreary Central 56-6.

2. Glasgow (5-1) lost to South Warren 21-20.

Either South Warren is not as good as we thought or Glasgow is way better. We will have to monitor this going forward to see which is which.

3. Ashland Blazer (4-1) idle.

4. Lou. Christian Academy (3-3) lost to Mercer Co. 45-42.

Guys it is time to just admit CAL is not the same without Milton Wright. They are good upfront, but they lack the type of back-end and back-field separation speed they have had in previous years. I believe they are finding life in a higher classification isn’t the “walk in the park” some of the teams stepping up envisioned (ask Louisville Central and Beechwood).

5. Belfry (3-2) beat Magoffin Co. 59-14.

Belfry won’t lose again until deep in the playoffs. If they get Dixon back and Bentley, sleeper title contender.

6. Lou. DeSales (3-2) beat Henry Co 43-6.

7. Paducah Tilghman (5-1) beat Trigg Co. 63-21.

8. Elizabethtown (4-2) beat nelson Co. 61-14.

9. Taylor Co. (5-1) beat Casey Co. 49-7.

10. Russell (5-1) beat Fleming Co. 55-7.

Class 2A

1. Somerset (5-0) beat Russellville 64-12.

Russellville is pathetic, period. Like scoring 64 points on a middle school team. However, Somerset is really, really good.

2. Mayfield (5-1) beat Fort Campbell 42-0.

Mayfield (we think) is overrated and riding off of the fumes of its run to the Title game the last two seasons consecutively. We will find out though, as they will play Caldwell County in Princeton, Kentucky this coming weekend.

3. Breathitt Co. (6-0) beat Middlesboro 57-7.

Breathitt County is a machine. It rolled into Middlesboro, a team many of you predicted would be Breathitt’s undoing, and was ahead of them 43-0 at the half. This is one of those rare 50-point margins which wasn’t as close as the final appeared. We talk about the “Big Blue Wave,” Breathitt’s offensive line (behind which RB’s have 133 carries, 1,474 yards rushing, 28 rushing TDs, and average 11.08 yards per rushing attempt) but someone needs to say something about Class 2A’s best defense which has only allowed opponents 48-points on the year, or 8 per outing. Many of those points were scored in blowouts with the reserves getting PT. Breathitt held Class 5A South Laurel to 8 points and South scored 40 points on Bell County. We talk about having to play championship level defense to win a championship. Breathitt County is playing it.

4. Lex. Christian (5-1) beat Williamsburg 55-21.

Lexington Christian is really good and really unfortunate to be in Somerset’s district. A team which should have challenged for the Title won’t make it out of the second round and that is a shame. If Somerset thinks LCA is scared of them…well, remember they lost last year’s Regional Final in Somerset on the Briar Jumper’s one yard line with 8 freshmen in the lineup. One of these days, Danville will be back and District 4 will be as tough as District 1 (Mayfield, Caldwell County, Murray).

5. Caldwell Co. (5-1) beat Ballard Memorial 57-16.

Don’t put anything past this coaching staff. Year after Year, they get better game after game. Head coach died right before the season so the Tigers from Princeton have a lot for which to play.

6. Owensboro Catholic (5-1) beat Todd Co. Central 48-24.

Owensboro Catholic got a game effort out of the Rebels who were ahead in the second Q, 16-14 before stalling out on an offensive drive at the Catholic ten which would have really made it interesting. Todd County still has to learn to deal with prosperity, and Keith can get them there. Catholic is among the best coached teams in the classification.

7. Murray (4-1) idle.

8. Newport (5-1) lost to Newport Central Catholic 37-6.

Clearly, Newport was overated.

9. Todd Co. Central (5-1) lost to Owensboro Catholic 48-24.

We know Todd County lost but they are still one of the classification’s ten best teams. They have a chance to reinforce that at Hancock County this coming Friday.

10. Beechwood (1-4) lost to Cin. Taft, Ohio 7-3.

Okay, Beechwood, we realize we may be the only AP voters refusing to rank you but, c’mon, 1-4 is 1-4. Don’t feel badly, were the first voters to drop Trinity out of last year’s weekly top-10 when they came out the gate 1-6. Maybe we are wrong about this but KPGFootball will not cast top-10 votes for football teams who have won one out of the first five games, Ever!

Class 1A

1. Pikeville (6-0) beat Lawrence Co. 49-26.

Pikeville is not as good as last year and they aren’t the best football team in the classification. There, we said it. Lawrence County is like beating dog-crap. Pikeville was fortunate to beat a Paintsville team which is also overrated.

2. Paintsville (3-2) lost to Hazard 23-14.

Sorry, but Hazard is Class 1A’s best football team. Now they will get a chance to show us.

3. Lou. Ky. Country Day (6-0) beat Southern 27-7.

4. Williamsburg (4-2) lost to Lex. Christian 55-21.

Okay, so you lost to Lexington Christian 55-21. I know legitimate 6A teams to whom that would (likely) happen.

5. Campbellsville (4-2) beat Fort Knox 50-8.

Fort Knox is trash (at football only, otherwise “Yeah America!). Beating them 50-8 is meaningless and not too patriotic either. C’mon Campbellsville, you’re better than that!

6. Raceland (3-2) beat Portsmouth West, Ohio 56-15.

7. Newport Central Catholic (4-2) beat Newport 37-6.

Newport Central Catholic, always tough, can beat anyone in 1A on any given night.

8. Crittenden Co. (3-2) lost to Union Co. 14-0.

Clearly Crittenden County is terrible. We had them way overrated.

9. Ludlow (4-1) beat Nicholas Co. 54-14.

10. Pinneville (5-1) beat Thomas Walker, VA 26-6.

(tie) Hazard (4-1) beat Paintsville 23-14.

Hazard coming into the week ranked 10th was a total joke. Pinneville is a Bell County football team. Boys from Bell County can play football. Don’t you know anything?
