Bernie Taupin is perhaps the greatest lyricist the music industry has ever known. If you are wondering who he is, Taupin is Sir Elton John’s lyricist. Taupin wrote the lyrics to “Candle in the Wind” which Elton and he amended to sing at Diana Spencer, former Princess of Wales, at her funeral several years ago. We are using it to express our great regret that our covering Isac Earl has come to a close. Enjoy this edition of our serial article, “Storm Warning.”

We have covered this game, daily, 24/7, 365, since April of 2015. In all that time, there have been players who have hit us dead in the heart strings. When these guys have moved on to college football or out into the “real world,” it was as if a cherished member of the family had passed along to receive his ultimate reward. Sylas Gunn will be one of those for us. We started covering him in middle school at Webster County. We count ourselves fortunate to have been along for the ride through the transfer to Hopkins County Central, his rise to the varsity roster, and his ultimately becoming one of Central’s greatest, all-time, all-around football players. Along the way we have seen him become one of the KHSAA’s all-around, all-time football players. It has been a privilege, son.

We get to travel to Munfordville and play the Hart County Raiders this coming weekend. That is a very hard place to have to play and the Raiders (8-2) are a very well coached (Chad Griffin), and red hot team. The Raiders opened the year with a 4-point loss to Logan County (4A, 8-2) in Russellville. That should tell you something about the talent we will be playing in round one. Still, we have some pieces which might well trouble the Raiders; and, where two teams enter a football field, either of them may emerge, on any give night, the victor. We need this game and are hoping our seniors can rise up and deliver it. Let’s get ready to car-pool to Murray, KY and cheer our boys onto victory. The Storm will close with Murray High (7-0), and then Crittenden County (4-3). It would be nice to slip on Murray and catch them looking ahead to 6-2 Caldwell, but hard to count on that. Regardless, you have to take teams one at a time. Murray High team presents an opportunity to play an opponent who may out-talent us a bit but who can have a bad night as easily as the next guy. This Webster County team presents an opportunity to play an opponent we have the horses to beat, even in Dixon. We need this game badly and are hoping our seniors can rise up and deliver it to us. Central is off this week. With the injuries we have suffered this season, and with the effect on our bottom line having some of these kids limited has caused, this off week may have come at the exact right time. We need to get healed up and ready for the Webster, Murray, and Crittenden stretch run towards the playoffs. If we run the table, we are assuredly in the playoffs. The Storm welcomes a district one heavyweight to Morton’s Gap this Friday night. Union County comes to Morton’s Gap fresh off a finals appearance in 2024 and a 21-14 win over a Hancock County team coming off an 8-win campaign a year ago and 4-1 entering the contest with Union last weekend. This is a daunting task but certainly not an undoable one. An upset here would be so huge. We have the personnel and ability to deliver such an upset but we have to be on our game, healthy, and playing mistake free/penalty free (pre-snap/composure) football to prevail. Come on out to Morton’s Gap this weekend and take in this first district clash. For all intents and purposes, the real season starts tomorrow night.

Like we have done in prior seasons, now the games are finally here, we will take the last week’s action and break it down and then look at the road ahead. We had a slight misstep on the road at Fort Campbell this past Friday night and return home to face one of the best 1A teams in the commonwealth of Kentucky, Kentucky Country Day from Louisville. Like we have done in prior seasons, now the games are finally here, we will take the last week’s action and break it down and then look at the road ahead. We had a slight misstep at home with North Hopkins this past Friday night and the trip to Fryar Stadium to play Fort Campbell means the sledding will not get much easier. Fort Campbell has made some personnel reassignments which should make the team harder than the one the staff has seen on film. Enjoy this feature and get out to the games this weekend.
