Carter Smith is indicative of the type youth movement the Lakers are enjoying since bringing on Coby Lewis to head its football program. Smith is a young, two-way lineman with a sturdy frame and very good power numbers in the weight room. We heard a player described by a coach who had offered him as a “Football Playing Jesse.” We looked that term up and, what do you know, it really is a thing. A “Football Playing Jesse” is a guy who may not be the right frame, may be a tad small, or a tad slow, or whatever but is just a guy who “does it” when he gets o the field between the lines and under the lights. Today we feature a kid who is as Football Playing of a Jesse as any kid in the KHSAA. The Everly brothers told us “Johnny [was] a Joker (He’s a bird)/ A very funny joker (He’s a bird)… What they would have told us, were they still with us, is that Johnny isn’t the only Bird. Nash Bird is a “Bird” and a very smooth and not so funny weapon for whom to have to game plan if you are playing Coach Scott Marsh’s football team. Bird had a huge junior year and was a player who should have been on our Large School All-State Football Team. What can we tell you? We missed. We have our eyes on him now and if he continues to play his senior season the way he played in ’25, I wouldn’t count on us missing him a second time. Enjoy this feature.

England once had an empire so fast the sun never set on it. This article is NOT about that England, it is about the Josiah England who may be the best returning RB/Corner in the KHSAA’s ’27 graduating class. Both Englands are thought of as leaders and noted for excellent performance. In this feature we will take a look at a player who’s junior season was cut short by injury but who showed us, as a sophomore, exactly of what he was capable. England is among the more coveted prospects in his graduating class and a bone fide, D-1 prospect. It will be entirely interesting to see how far he can take this Mayfield club provided he stays healthy in ’26. Enjoy the feature.

I once heard having an accomplished place kicker in the fold likened to finding a $20.00 bill in your dry cleaning. You may not know you even need $20.00 but it comes in handy when you are both hungry and thirsty and you find what you need just sitting in your pocket. Jayden Couch is not just an accomplished placekicker who converted just under 80% of his PATs and was 100% on FGs but he is a freshman to boot. It must be something to realize your kicking game is so competently handled and looks to remain so for the foreseeable future. Congratulations to Jayden Couch for being our ‘Wake Up and Smell the Coffee (or Tea)’ Player of the Week from Lasaters Coffee & Tea where you are more than served, you are loved!

We continue on with our offseason coverage not really discussing players of the week so much as discussing featured players and prospects. Cooper Adams is a kid with a ton of tough who played eight games of varsity run as a freshman and is only going to improve as he fills out and develops. Adams is an accomplished wrestler who was a Kentucky champion in middle school and already enjoying success as a varsity grappler on the high school level. Adams is the kind of kid coaches want to coach and, in the end, that may be the finest compliment which can be paid to him. Enjoy the feature.

Aiden Jesse comes from a Hopkinsville family which knows a thing or two about the receiver position. Father, Maurice, was a star WR in his day playing for the Hoptown Tigers. Son, Reece Jesse, set several all-time, receiving records in his day out wide for the Tigers. Little brother, Aiden Jesse, has been a terror and a star for the last edition of the Hoptown Tigers football team to ever take a playing field. You boys will be missed, know that! We just couldn’t say goodbye without one final tip of the hat to what was an incredible performance by Aiden Reece in the second round of the 6A, KHSAA football playoffs and the last game of football the Hoptown Tigers will ever play. Well done, young man.

Madisonville North Hopkins rebounded from consecutive losses to puff Warren Central’s magic Dragons, 52-12, this past Thursday evening. The Maroons had nearly 400 yards of total offense and Mr. Football candidate, Markezz Hightower, chipped in 173-yards of his own. Ryder Sandidge contributed 93-rushing yards and a pair of TDs.
