Good lines, whether at the high school, college, or even the professional level are solid up the middle. The shortest distance between any two points is a straight line. That is why pressure up the A-Gap, in a straight line to the players handling the football in the offensive backfield, is “no bueno.” LCA didn’t have to concern itself much with A-Gap pressure. The Eagles had a pair of All-State performers in the A-Gap in guard, Matthew Montgomery, and center, Nick Greer. Their continued strong play will be instrumental in any chance the Eagles have to repeat in ’26. With all of the young talent returning to the roster, chances of another title added to the program’s previous two looks like pretty fair odds to us. Enjoy the feature.

Christian Shackelford is built exactly like the “big boys” want to see him. He’s 6’7,” 290-pounds and sports a 3.8-GPA. Shackelford got six (6) games of run over his sophomore season and that isn’t too bad considering LCA had the most senior laden group of trench men in the KHSAA a year ago at any level of competition. There will be plenty of competition to fill some of these holes in ’25 resulting from the Spring ’24 commencement ceremonies. Enjoy this look at a ’27 who seems destined to grow into one of his graduating class’s very best offensive linemen before it is said and done. Let’s keep it comfortable out there, Kentucky, and allow us to help you out in that regard.

I remember when I was a lawyer every town, no matter how small, had a big-timer amongst its people “before the bar.” There are hometown heroes in every small high school and there are former “greats” tied to every football program across the commonwealth. Today, we salute two coaches of whom you possibly have never heard but two guys (nevertheless) who had a ton to do with the programs which still exist and compete today. Ralph Mills was a guy for Hoptown in the 40s on an incredible “heater” and Preston “Ty” Holland won Murray its first title and the stadium is named for him. Enjoy this feature about two men who deserve being remembered and honored.

There are some really outstanding freshmen football players who got a ton of reps during the ’24 season. There was even a ’28 kid who got 13-games of run behind the best OL unit in Kentucky at any classification. LCA’s Matthew Montgomery is a 6’0,” 230-pound guy with a 275-pound bench, a 405-pound squat, and a penchant for flattening defenders unfortunate enough to get in his pulling trajectory on traps and pulls. LCA came out the gate slowly this season. Of course the 2A powerhouse opened with the best high school team in Kentucky (any classification), Boyle County, then followed that up with a six-point loss to an always tough Franklin County (4A). The Eagles are 5-0 since to include wins over the defending 1A champion (Pikeville) and the defending 3A champion (Christian Academy-Louisville). As we come down the regular season homestretch, the Eagles are looking every bit the container we expected to see.
