We identified John Luke Minner as one of the best LBs in the KHSAA in 2024. That is why he made first team All-State on our Big Ass Fan’s Small School team. Coming into ’25 he figures to be on the list again provided he performs commensurate to how he performed a year ago. He has committed to play collegiately at Brown University in the Ivy Leagues. That is a Division I ride to one of the country’s most prestigious schools. If catching a ride to the Ivy Leagues isn’t prize worthy, we aren’t sure we know what is. We started this journey we call Kentucky Prep Gridiron reporting mainly on middle school players. When our initial middle school stars matriculated to high school, we came with them. Alexander Schuster looks to battle it out for a slot along the interior offensive line for Kentucky’s premier high school football program. It is hard to find the field for Trinity until your junior season no matter who you are. Schuster has worked his tail off and has bided his time. It is his day. Trinity is coming off a 13-2 season and yet another 6A KHSAA football title. All told, Trinity has won 29-championships and favored to make it 30. Chase Bell and Camden Page look to battle it out preseason for the QB-slot at South Warren vacated by Bryce Button’s graduation. South Warren is coming off a 12-2 season where it was arguably the second best team in 5A in ’24. Where will they figure into the 6A title chase? Well, we don’t know. We would suppose they will go as far as either Page or Bell carries them. Chase Bell is a ’28 guy with an incredible frame and athleticism so impressive Maryland has already offered. Bell’s frame and growth potential are carrying the day for him as he is our Big Ass Fans Kentucky Comfort Creator this week. Let’s keep it cool out there KY.

Brayden Fultz is a player who reports quite a bit of versatility, particularly on the Kentucky 5A level. Fultz reports playing guard, DE, DT, MLB, and FB. Of these positions we like him best at either guard, where he reports playing, and offensive center, where we think he should get a long look. We have talked to some recruiters who have asked us about him. At 6’0,” 290 with a 315-pound bench press, a quarter ton back squat (505), and a 255-pound power clean, this kid has the strength, power, and explosion programs covet at the center slot. Sam Simpson went 32-years coaching at two places not easy to win ball games. Marion County was five years and the other 27 were spent in Lexington at Henry Clay High. Simpson won 193-games at Henry Clay, taking the Blue Devils to one of its two visits to the title game. Henry Clay beat St. Francis DeSales back in 1981 for the 4A title under Jack Bell. Simpson would take the team on an improbably four (4) game run through the playoffs which ultimately ended in the title game against Mike Glasur’s Tigers. Well, that ended up like matchups with St. Xavier often do, with the Tigers leaving the field with victory. Enjoy this installment of our “Slow Motion Replay” series.

Donavon Smith from Barbourville, Kentucky is among the very best the ’27 graduating class has at the LB position anywhere on the eastern end of the commonwealth of Kentucky. Smith is a 6’0,” 210-pounder who hits like a ton of bricks. Smith registered 116-tackles, over his sophomore season, and contributed seven (7) QB-sacks, four (4)-TFLs, 2-FFs, and 2-FRs, one of which he scooped and scored. Knox Central is pleased to have this type talent returning in its defensive second level and we are glad we get to enjoy this cat another two seasons. Enjoy this feature about a kid whose performance made the unbearable heat a tad more bearable and who hopes his performance brings comfort to the home fans around Knox County, KY this upcoming Fall. Greeneville, Kentucky has been described by one of our generation’s finest folk artists and song writers (John Prine) as “paradise.” We don’t know about that, but don’t dispute it, but we do know the Mustangs have some enviable, young talent to mix in with some big-time returners for the ’25 Fall season. One of those returners is Trever Hardesty who, we have been assured, will NOT come off the field next season. I know it seems this particular feature has promoted quite a few Sayre Spartans. We can assure you it isn’t intended. It is just hard to ignore a program which has just polished off a perfect regular season at 10-0 headed into the Class A KHSAA playoffs. Why is that so hard to ignore? How about because there are only seven (7) such records among the 223-programs playing football across the commonwealth and Sayre is the only perfect regular season in its classification.
