DJ Wren was a tremendous running back at the 1A level for the Lynn Camp Wildcats from Corbin, KY. Wren averaged nearly 9-yards per carry and close to 200-yards a night. Wren was the team’s leading passer, rusher, scorer, tackler, and tackler behind the enemy line. Wren is a varsity basketball player too who figures to have a bright future ahead of him regardless of where or in what sport he happens to spend it. This guy is just one of many examples of outstanding football players who go undiscovered, every season, throughout the Bluegrass. Enjoy this look at a kid who made our Small-School All-State Football team this past season.

Mason Trimble did a ton of stuff in 2025. He was ranked a top-5 Kentucky QB by nearly every national publication which publishes such rankings, he made our large school all-state football team, he led his team to 10-wins, threw for over 2,000-yards, around 26-TDs, ran for another 8-scores and did all of this against the hardest schedule played by any KHSAA football team at any level of competition. Now, in ’26, he has pledged himself to Kentucky’s most prestigious, liberal arts, small college football program. However, there is nothing small about being a Centre Man. We heard a player described by a coach who had offered him as a “Football Playing Jesse.” We looked that term up and, what do you know, it really is a thing. A “Football Playing Jesse” is a guy who may not be the right frame, may be a tad small, or a tad slow, or whatever but is just a guy who “does it” when he gets o the field between the lines and under the lights. Today we feature a kid who is as Football Playing of a Jesse as any kid in the KHSAA. The Everly brothers told us “Johnny [was] a Joker (He’s a bird)/ A very funny joker (He’s a bird)… What they would have told us, were they still with us, is that Johnny isn’t the only Bird. Nash Bird is a “Bird” and a very smooth and not so funny weapon for whom to have to game plan if you are playing Coach Scott Marsh’s football team. Bird had a huge junior year and was a player who should have been on our Large School All-State Football Team. What can we tell you? We missed. We have our eyes on him now and if he continues to play his senior season the way he played in ’25, I wouldn’t count on us missing him a second time. Enjoy this feature.

We continue on with our offseason coverage not really discussing players of the week so much as discussing featured players and prospects. Kenyon Cunningham is a kid with a ton athletic ability and potential who was put in a very tough spot for any freshman both in the semi-state and then in the championship game. He will be called on to be “The Man” going forward as senior Wyatt Robbins has exhausted his eligibility and is headed to play football for the Murray State Racers. Cunningham is a ranked basketball prospect in the commonwealth among ’29s and is already enjoying success as a varsity basketball player on a 12-2 ball club. Cunningham is the kind of kid coaches want to coach and, in the end, that may be the finest compliment which can be paid to him. Enjoy the feature.

Among my favorite groups in the seventies was the group “Supertramp.” They had a wonderful song entitled, “Take the Long Way Home” released in 1979. Kylan Combs knows all about taking the long way to anywhere. Combs’s home is on a football field, positioned at safety, or anywhere on a gridiron actually. You see, Kylan Combs is a “Combs.” In the Appalachias, you don’t have to say any more. We fully understand the level of citizenship that surname requires and signifies and the football playing effort and talent associated with that particular family throughout the region. Kylan Combs has taken the long way home to stardom in Breathitt’s defensive third level once again and has made another of our Small School All-State Football Teams (Big Ass Fans) and we are mighty glad to welcome him home. England once had an empire so fast the sun never set on it. This article is NOT about that England, it is about the Josiah England who may be the best returning RB/Corner in the KHSAA’s ’27 graduating class. Both Englands are thought of as leaders and noted for excellent performance. In this feature we will take a look at a player who’s junior season was cut short by injury but who showed us, as a sophomore, exactly of what he was capable. England is among the more coveted prospects in his graduating class and a bone fide, D-1 prospect. It will be entirely interesting to see how far he can take this Mayfield club provided he stays healthy in ’26. Enjoy the feature.

I once heard having an accomplished place kicker in the fold likened to finding a $20.00 bill in your dry cleaning. You may not know you even need $20.00 but it comes in handy when you are both hungry and thirsty and you find what you need just sitting in your pocket. Jayden Couch is not just an accomplished placekicker who converted just under 80% of his PATs and was 100% on FGs but he is a freshman to boot. It must be something to realize your kicking game is so competently handled and looks to remain so for the foreseeable future.
