Very quietly, almost without notice, Coby Lewis, in his first season at the helm of the Lakers, is turning in a whale of a season and turning a lot of heads around the commonwealth in coaching circles. He has “The Lakers” out to a 4-1 start, the best start it started the 2016 season with a 6-1 record and one of Western Kentucky’s great defensive units. This week’s Player of the Week, Logan Smith, enjoyed just a spectacular game, but then again, he has been doing things like this his entire Laker career. It is called the “Holy War.” Lexington Catholic versus Lexington Christian. It is one of the more anticipated rivalry games in the commonwealth of Kentucky. Like we have done in prior seasons, now the games are finally here, we will take the last week’s action and break it down and then look at the road ahead. We had a slight misstep on the road at Fort Campbell this past Friday night and return home to face one of the best 1A teams in the commonwealth of Kentucky, Kentucky Country Day from Louisville. We were watching Breathitt and Hazard play last Friday night on the Bluegrass Sports Nation. What stood out to us was the intricate way in which Coach Chandler and his crew utilized screens to chunk off yardage. There was one screen in particular where the ball was rifled to Gavin Johnson and he ran away from Breathitt’s back-third like they were being run in a plowed field. Talk about your “separation speed,” Johnson was showing it off and then some. The fact of the matter, as we approach mid-season, Gavin Johnson has amply demonstrated his being as good a multi-phase athlete as there is anywhere in Kentucky at the small school level (1A, 2A, and 3A). This kid will have to be discussed heading into next year as a possible “Mr. Football” candidate or my name isn’t “Friday Night Fletch.” We all know it is…

We warned people beating 6A Hoptown would be challenge if Devaree Gude played. Without Gude, we picked Hoptown to win by 28…and they won by 27. Well, you know the Bank of Cadiz has a Hoptown branch and Tremayne Clay, from Hoptown High, had an extraordinary game against the Trigg County Wildcats. Thursday night (September 11, 2025) the Maroons from Madisonville North Hopkins found themselves facing judgement day. What else can a team term facing the defending KHSAA football champion, 4A’s top ranked team, and Kentucky’s 8th best football team regardless of enrollment or classification. The “Mops on Top” made for themselves the best case it could and Markezz Hightower rested his case for Mr. Football. All that is left now is to await the jury’s return and report of its verdict. We tried to tell everyone Prestonsburg was back last year when the team posted 11-wins against 2-losses. Everyone got too caught up in P-burg’s late season loss to Breathitt, a Breathitt squad with a very young offensive backfield which had grown up quite a bit by the 1st of November. Anyway, Prestonsburg just beat the best team on its schedule in overcoming Hazard in Prestonsburg this pas Saturday.
