Sam Simpson went 32-years coaching at two places not easy to win ball games. Marion County was five years and the other 27 were spent in Lexington at Henry Clay High. Simpson won 193-games at Henry Clay, taking the Blue Devils to one of its two visits to the title game. Henry Clay beat St. Francis DeSales back in 1981 for the 4A title under Jack Bell. Simpson would take the team on an improbably four (4) game run through the playoffs which ultimately ended in the title game against Mike Glasur’s Tigers. Well, that ended up like matchups with St. Xavier often do, with the Tigers leaving the field with victory. Enjoy this installment of our “Slow Motion Replay” series.

Larry French has one of the better “coaching trees” among the all-time greats across Kentucky. French’s tree includes Jean Rollins, Larry Mofield, Chuck Smith, Clay Clevenger, Brad Hood, David Buchanan, and Jack Robertson. Several of these guys have been featured in this magazine. At least two of them have been featured in our “Slow Motion Replay” which was designed to highlight the all-time guys. David Buchanan’s dad, John, hired Ed Rall at Boyle and Larry French at Mercer…. both guys right out of college, so French was even mentored by and all-timer and coached with several others. Enjoy this look at KY’s third winningest coach, all-time, and a guy likely to join the 400+ wins club before too much longer.

Chuck Smith co-hosts a popular podcast on Spotify with his long time friend, David Buchanan. The show is called, “The Coaches Office” and boasts a dais of of KHSAA coaching icons, one a second generation high school coach (Buchanan) and the other a six (6) time KHSAA state titleholder (Smith). Chuck Smith is one of the greatest to ever walk a sideline in the KHSAA and the first coach to ever win 5-consecutive titles. Far cry from an All-State linebacker from Jeffersontown, KY. Keshawn Newman is among the better ’26 players from around Kentucky playing RB/LB. He also got eight (8) games of run on the varsity at one of the harder places to break into the lineup early anywhere around the mountains. We believe this is the first time we have awarded the Jerky Prize package to a head football coach. Well, it isn’t exactly everyday some head football coach celebrates his 350th win. There have only been two others in HS history in Kentucky to have had such a celebration, Phillip Haywood and Dudley Hilton.
